WRIST PAIN WITH BRUISING

Posted by ZeeGee @fourof5zs, Mar 5, 2022

Not sure correct group.

About 3 am this morning I awakened with a sharp pain in my inner wrist. It looked like bluish vein knot then. When I got up about 6:15 it appeared to be bruise. My grip is okay. Movement of typing hurts some or playing a game on iPad. Sharp pain if I bend my hand upward and back.

I had Tightrope Procedure surgery on my thumb in January 2020. A weakening from that surgery. Aging? I'm 70 years old. Did I sleep in some weird position? Is it a torn ligament/tendon?

Does not feel like a sprain… I sprained this wrist when I was in my 30s playing volleyball. I have not fallen in a few years and my instinct was to protect my ribs.. so no hands involved in any falls. I might have tucked my hand under my pillow. This morning my hand was by my side when I awoke.. but don't know where it was seconds before.

Anyone else experience this?

I will make an appointment with hand doctor.

Hi ZeeGee @fourof5zs, I've had similar pain when I've slept on my wrist in a funny way that tweaks a nerve but haven't experienced the bruising below the wrist. I do have carpal tunnel but haven't had any surgeries on my hands. I know there are a lot of things that can cause hand pains so I think it's a good thing to check it out with a hand doctor. This article lists some of the common problems/causes for wrist pain if you haven't already seen it -- https://www.verywellhealth.com/wrist-pain-causes-symptoms-and-treatments-2549458

I'd like to hear what you find out from your hand doctor if you don't mind updating us.

Thank you John.

I have never had anything like this before. The bruising just puts a mystery on it for me. My neighbor who is a wrecker driver is always hurting something… he said “you pulled a tendon”. I am sure I did .. but could also be torn. It swelled a lot this afternoon. I used moist heating pad on it awhile ago and the swelling went down.

I dug through my braces. I have had many over the years. I ran a cash register and calculator as well as doing a lot of lifting in my work days in retail and in weeding many vegetable gardens.. kneading bread dough, etc. It takes a toll on the body. I found a brace that seems to be comfortable to wear and will wear it until I see a doctor.

Carpal tunnel and other wrist pain can be helped with stretches. Ergonomics--sitting up straignt, with feet on the ground, with shoulders in good position, desk height set up right go a long way for prevenition. PT before surgery is advised. Here are some I've done in the past for relief. I wear a splint at night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoKUWlKK_Vc

John, when I called this morning for an appointment the lady said it would be weeks before the hand doctor could see me. … unless an emergency. I told her that I was mostly interested in seeing someone for an evaluation. They had an opening with a PA-C at 10:30.

I went … had 3 x-rays to make sure the bones were fine. Then he accessed my wrist and listened to me. He said he was not sure what was going on with the tendons and not sure which one because the pain was across the whole wrist and often the tendon involved is not right under the bruise.. which he said bruising just sometimes happens. He said it is a sprain which can be either a strain or torn tendon.

Since the pain is now mild and no new numbness. .. I am to wear a brace to prevent damage and to aid in healing The swelling responded to moist heat so continue it.

Oh .. I had to get another brace to add to my collection. The one I picked was not long enough and he did not like the bend of it. They ran it through my insurance first and insurance is paying for it.

He wants to see me back in two weeks.

I watched this one and I think she has one on the thumb too that I watched after my thumb surgery in 2020. COVID hit after I had done a few weeks of PT and insurance would not pay for tele visits for PT. COVID was very bad in my town. I watched a lot of videos. I needed exercises for my thumb and wrist. I have done exercises for the wrist for years.

Ergonomics and posture … yes , very important and I have practiced them. Another is nutrition. I try to eat healthy, but I have stomach and esophagus problems and have had several abdominal surgeries. I do not absorb all of my nutrients. So I have weak bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles. I had several years that my vitamin d3 level was none existent. It is now registering on the low side of the scale. Vitamin d is what helps all the other vitamins and minerals to be absorbed. My magnesium is on mid scale now, To make things more whacky my calcium was high… now it is mid scale since I am absorbing more vitamin d. If I take high doses of vitamin d3 my muscles hurt horribly. I have been told that I am not the only one that happens with.

Thank you for your comment and the video.

I've been wondering about the D3 and "pinching" muscles, but it seems like the daily 2000 mg dose doesn't act as badly as the weekly. I am still experimenting and watching. I have nodules in lungs/thyroid that there are new reports as being caused by low D3. I also watch diet: GERD triggers on webmd has some good advice, and I'm sure you've also already been there. I eat smaller meals these days to avoid stomach dumping and feel like I'm missing nutrients.. I am glad some of the advice is useful to you! Thanks .

My bottle for D3 and multi-vitamin have IU as measurement.. between the gel D3 and chewable multi-vitamin I take 1000 IU a day. I have tried to increase it more, but the pain begins in the muscles. To me … achy, throbbing like the flu.

Yes.. GERD .. since 1991 … with giant hiatal hernia that would not stay repaired. I wound up having a gastric bypass and so far the hernia is staying in place. I can only eat about a cup of food at one time so 5-6 munchies a day. I'm never hungry so I just time it out.. or if eat something if I am lightheaded.

My wrist hurts less today so think it is just strained.

Are you saying the D3 helps? I have hand and arm pain in my right extremity and it is getting worse. I do see a opthomologist and will ask him about this as I have been getting cortisone shots in my shoulder.....arthritis? This all started 6 months ago and is getting worse.

D3 doesn't really help muscles and soft tissue cramps, but magnesium does. For longstanding pain in your arm and wrist/hand, visit an Orthopedic and get images and referral to PT. They may offer a shot, and that is ok, but it only lasts so long. While it is in effect, the physical therapy can help loosen and strengthen your arm and hand, so I suggest that you follow up with that. If you spend time at a desk, make sure you are not sitting with rounded shoulders, that the desk is the right height and that your feet sit on the floor or a stool.

Vitamin D is a hormone, but is referred to as a vitamin. It helps in how our bodies absorb the vitamins and minerals that help our muscles and other parts of our bodies. I ask my doctor sometimes to check my magnesium.. usually he will check my potassium, D-3, iron, and B-12 without me asking. My insurance pays, but some insurance companies may not.

It sounds like whatever you have going on should be evaluated by a orthopedist. You should not be getting frequent injections. .. I think recommended is 3 a year of steroid, but sometimes they inject anti-inflammatory medication. Make sure you know what they are injecting.

Pain down the arm can be caused by problems of the neck or shoulder .. most often the neck. The ulna nerve .. funny bone … can also cause pain in the arm and effects the little finger, ring finger and thumb and make gripping something like nail clippers difficult. If needed get a second opinion on what is going on with you.

Did you mean to say orthopedist instead of opthomologist? If so that is fine… I sometimes can come nowhere close to the word I mean.

To reply to comment so the person knows you replied you need to type the @ symbol and then the persons users name. To reply to me on this post you hit “reply” and you would start to type: @fourof5zs. .. a list of names will appear as you type and choose mine if you are replying to my post. 😊 That way I will get an email notification of your comment. This time I just happen to come here and read your reply.

I am always glad to help find answers to questions. Sometimes I come across things I never heard of … but have been through so much I know a little of this & that. I never heard of this bruising happening with a sprain.. so I learn something through others too.
