Wrist joint replacement
My ortho doc is recommending a wrist replacement. Of course, I'm skeptical with any surgery and want to hear how this particular surgery went for others.

I’ve never heard of it…..I would love more info on it. I have real wrist problems w EDS and a bad fall onto them…..very loose…..they told me there was no wrist replacement.
@tinknocker and @terrirussell, here is a bit more information on wrist replacement (arthoplasty): https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/treatment/wrist-joint-replacement-wrist-arthroplasty/.
It seems as though wrist replacements are becoming a bit more common, but still used in certain situations on a case-by-case basis. Upon reading, the average wrist joint replacement lasts 10-15 years and has benefits of mobility vs. a wrist fusion.
@tinknocker, being cautious with any surgery is a good approach. What has you most concerned about a wrist replacement? How are you doing currently with your wrist as far as pain and use go?
I had a wrist replacement about 10 -11 years ago. I am now looking at having it removed.
It was a tough surgery going in and a long recovery but once healed, my wrist was great. I am forever grateful to my hand dr who bought me time to play my guitar and do photography - among other things.
I will say - on the other end of this - my joints have deteriorated so much they are baffled on how it’s all coming out and how easy it won’t be to fuse which is now my only option. Still - I would never trade the past 10 years with the replacement for anything. Nothing wagered - nothing gained.

I am just beginning the exploration of options for my failing wrist.
History - I have osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis in my hands and wrists. About 20 years ago, I had a proximal row carpectomy to remove several bones in my right (non-dominant) hand and scrape the tip of the ulna.
After many years of use/abuse, I am seeing increased deformity, and experiencing increased pain and weakness.
The only way I manage to get through the day is by kinesio taping the wrist, wearing a brace for all but the most mild use, and basically "bathing" the hand and wrist in Voltaren 2.32% gel twice a day. (Oral NSAID's are not an option, and I already take a DMARD disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug) for my arthritis.
My best friend had total wrist fusion a couple years ago, and I don't feel that I could tolerate the limitations to my activity, so I am looking at whether total wrist replacement is an option for me.
Have you had a total wrist replacement? If so, how long and difficult was the recovery? What were your mid- to long-term results? Would you do it again?
