Withdrawal from gabapentin after 1 dose

Posted by botterd @botterd, Nov 24, 2025

I'm finishing up chemo for breast cancer. Have experienced some neuropathy in fingers and toes. Doctor prescribed once daily 300mg gabapentin and I have taken one pill and hour ago. Changed my mind about taking since it can cause diarrhea. The chemo Taxol caused epic diarrhea that I'm still dealing with. I don't want to take any gabapentin. Can I just stop after 1 pill?

I took gabapentin for over a year ... but took myself off it (my doctor had retired) after finding it didn't seem to reduce the neuropathy and left me with brain fog. I wasn't warned to be careful about stopping it abruptly. The brain fog has now lifted but my short term memory seems to be somewhat affected. I now wear fleece socks before going to bed to warm up my feet. This provides more relief than the gaba ever did!

@pamfitz Oh no!! I'm so sorry to hear about your short term memory being affected 🙁 Mine is already broken after a car wreck years ago, so I'm curious if I'll have any left once I'm off of it... hmmm. Something to consider, definitely. Thanks for sharing! Excited to see the brain fog go - it's very interfering with literally everything, I'm sure you know.

@pamfitz I should clarify that I don't know that gabapentin affected my short-term memory. I may have coincidentally noticed it then. Just be a little advice to be more careful than I was.

I started taking gabapentin 4 days ago, 100mg at bedtime. I had such indigestion (burning stomach) that I quit and have no withdrawal. It takes a while to build an addiction.

Gabapentin affects people differently for so many reasons. Work closely with your physician and make sure they are aware of all the medications you presently take - both over the counter and prescribed medications. Once you add another medication, i.e. gabapentin, keep track of new changes - physically and mentally. If you notice changes that concern you, revisit your physician to discuss and make changes if necessary.
