Why don’t anxiety meds work for me?

Posted by dorothy1914 @dorothy1914, Feb 13 5:13pm

In Sept. 2024 out of nowhere I developed extreme anxiety. Went to primary care doctor and was prescribed Effexor (which I had successfully taken previously). This time it didn’t provide any help. Dr. then prescribed Lexapro (which didn’t help) and then Celexa (which didn’t help). By this time, I lost 45 pounds by not being able to eat and constant diarrhea. Dr. then told me to find another practitioner as there was nothing more she could do for me. Since then I have seen 4 PNP and none of their prescribed meds have helped. What do I do?

Hi there I suffer terribly from flash backs literally hundreds a day they make me cry so I spend every day crying before I go out when I’m home and especially at night I have been told you can get help but I don’t believe anyone can stop your thoughts especially when flash backs take you to exactly what and where they took place they are gut wrenching

You are 100% right. I cannot control the thoughts in my head that are there all the time. Therapists say, let it go, forget about what happened that caused you to spiral downwards. Yeah, right, if I could do that, I would be a miracle worker.

I have negative thoughts constantly and I started to counter each one with a more positive thought, plus telling myself to get back to my present self. Living in the now is hard for me.

I am going through a terrible time with no hope in sight.

I could not suggest any medications for depression to anyone because of the historical, documented basis of treating "depression", a widely variable term with myriad characteristics that there is one set of biological measurable evidence to back, though claimed so otherwise by "authorities" in their corresponding fields.
I suffer from chronic low level to full blown episodes of "depression " over 40 years that's never been successful with any psychiatric medication.
For me it's a result of a series of very unfortunate life events and my inability to cope well with them. I've tried to develop coping skills with limited success at times.
It'd be interesting to share experiences and get more insight.
Wishing all well.

I have been on most antidepressants over 45 years. They all were better than nothing. My advice is always to get counseling. I have tried many and finally found a good one for me. Keep trying, don’t give up.

Do you know why you’re so depressed? Is it situational or psychological. Can you elaborate?

I don’t really know which but I think it is situational.

Please see a psychologist. You may have to try several to find one that helps you. Life is a gift but can be terrifying. Some doctors will prescribe antidepressants that won’t help. I take Clonazepam and Valium. I am now tapering down with success. Be strong and work hard to resolve any issues that may be buried in your subconscious. Good Luck!

Claudia:

I am sorry to hear you are still struggling.

You and I are battling the same thing. High anxiety and depression. The SSRI recommendations have not panned out.

Are you still trying to get on the SSRI?

Doctor changed me to generic Valium from Clonozepam. Helped with severe morning tremors . But only getting a couple hours of sleep with a 10 Mg dose. I am checking back with Doctor tomorrow

Regards,

John

I am very weak today. Last night’s Valium didn’t help at all. Don’t know what to do next.

That makes two of us. Not sure what to do next. Have tried lots of various modalities and of course continued therapy.
