Who has metastatic duodenal cancer (urothelial spread and more)?

Posted by enelram12 @enelram12, Jun 28 7:04pm

My father has had cancer knowingly since October 24, started in the duodenum and urolethil spread. Was in the hospital for two months. They took two weeks to find the cancer. He could not eat was on iv, feeding tubes, etc. the oncologist resection Ed his stomach to his intestines and he was able to eat again. While being on a host of medications for stomach pain, and enzymes and the out in a jg tube for drainage. He went home in December. We have been doing home palliative care. The cancer has now spread into the liver and pancreas and they will try to put a stent to aid with the pain. He has been on this journey for 9 months. He can still toilet and eat and walk for about 15 minutes. He has had so many side effects and still wants to fight for more time .

He has been palliative the whole time. He did start immunotherapy in January , but it has just stopped due to complications with the pancreas and liver counts being so high.

Your concern and caring come through in what you wrote. Your father is lucky to have you. Do you have specific concerns about any of the symptoms? Palliative care can be very helpful, and I hope it is proving useful. Do you feel your dad is hoping to stay alive for a specific event or to see a particular person? Or for more time in general? You don't say if there are other caregivers supporting him. But having been a caregiver in several situations I just want to also encourage you to take care of yourself, and rest too when needed.

@enelram12: You Dad’s cancer diagnosis maybe could be Carcinoid/Neuroendocrine Tumor Cancer like I have. Mine was found by exploratory endoscopic procedure similarly at my duodenum & small intestine junction and found to have metastasized to my liver. With my diagnosis of Carcinoud/Neuroendocrine Tumor Cancer, I was put on Lanreotide monthly injections that controlled my digestive symptoms in 11/2021 and last June 2024 I had a Lutathera series treatment that shrank up my tumors - smaller than they were in 2021! This has given me more time!
I tell you this tale to encourage you to explore a second opinion for your Dad by Neuroendocrine Oncologist Specialist to verify the original diagnosis. There are 24 Hour Urine test and blood tests to help docs diagnose.
This verified diagnosis could offer treatments to help your Dad live with this NET cancer as a chronic disease! I hope this helps you decide on your Dad’s treatment. Medical research in this field continues to offer treatments that give hope to many of us cancer patients.

Thank you. Today is stent day in the pancreas as the cancer has spread everywhere. The liver is also affected. He sleeps a lot. I appreciate you

We work with the palliative care team at home to manage his symptoms as the cancer has now spread to pancreas and liver. My two youngest sisters are by his side most of the time for the past 8 months we have a schedule. His bp is all over the place. Thank you for your kind words. We have stopped all travel and work around our work schedules, prepare meals, the nurse calls or comes to the house once a week. My mom passed so his great grand children he adores.

It is touching to hear of how the family is working together. The care my parents gave my grandparents made a big positive impression on me when I was a child. And my daughter and her first cousins were all involved in my parents' last years. I hope things go as smoothly as possible for all of you.

@enelram12: I’m sending a hug to you. I so wanted to learn that your Dad’s cancer was NET and might benefit by treatment. I hope my false hope was not unsettling. There are so many types of this ugly disease!
My good thoughts are with your family as you struggle through. I hope your Dad is made comfortable in body and mind. Good Hospice groups are professionals who can take-on some of your burden.
I wish y’all peace & calm.
