White pimple type sores on tongue from Hydrea

Posted by mamsgirl1998 @mamsgirl1998, Jun 2 8:51pm

I have been taking Hydra for about 14 months with no issues or side effects. However, this last week I noticed I had a white pimple type sore on my tongue and it has not healed yet. It is quite painful and uncomfortable. I was wondering if anybody has developed mouth sores after taking Hydrea for over one year? Or perhaps it’s something else? It is hard to use any type of medicine as it’s side of my tongue and nothing stays on.

Yes. These show up occasionally, but for me are gone in 24-48 hours. If yours are frequent and lasting, your doc may be able to prescribe what used to be called "magic mouthwash."

If I put a little milk of magnesia on a swab and paint the sores, it takes the sting out. Forgot where I heard this trick ...

Hi, over time I have noticed that I might get a mouth sore if I don't hydrate properly. I use a product called Smart Mouth which is a Zinc activated oral rinse. It is quite effective. In the US you can find it a WalMart.

I have avoided this issue by swirling water around my mouth, tip in the Hydroxyurea capsule, swallow and then finish with the rest of the glass of water. Also, I never touch the capsule as I slide it into a spare lid first.
Best wishes, Eileen

My son would get those white tongue soars from antibiotics prescribed by hematologist.. Magic Mouthwash, for sure, works great. Took a few days.

Long before I was diagnosed with PV I would get those “pimples” on my tongue, very painful for a couple of days and then gone. Until I went to dentist for what I thought was a gum/tooth problem because of really bad pain. My dentist, for over 40 years, sent me to oral surgeon because pain was bad and he couldn’t find source. Oral surgeon found one of those”pimples” and told me it was canker sore. Advised me to use “sensitive” toothpaste to avoid some ingredient in regular toothpaste.
Now, years after that, and only using “sensitive” toothpaste I rarely get the “pimples” anymore, until about a month ago. I had a bad one on the side of my tongue that lasted over a week and was pretty painful which reoccurred about a week later and was less painful.
I’ve taken 1000mg HU for over 3 years. I don’t associate those “pimples” with it.
