Mucus after using bathroom

What can cause mucus after using the bathroom, both after urinating and having bowel movements?

Since around November or December 2025, I’ve noticed there’s mucus hanging down from me or white stringy particles in the toilet bowl. This has happened both after urinating and having bowel movements, and there’s times it’s hung down from my front, and other times it’s hung down in my rear. It doesn’t happen every time I use the bathroom, but its happened most days. I’ve been worried because it’s been happening often, and it hasn’t really stopped since I noticed it late last year.

I’ve been having other issues with my bowels, like I’ve felt like when I have bowel movements I’m not getting everything out. I’ve been having bowel movements most days though, but I still feel like there’s stool in me that I’m not getting out.

What could be causing the excess mucus?

Yesterday I started noticing white dots/particles in my urine. I know it’s not toilet paper because I noticed the dots before I wiped, unless there’s something leftover in the toilet bowl causing this. Since yesterday, it hasn’t happened all the time and this morning I went to the bathroom and didn’t notice the specks. Ive noticed them every time I’ve used the restroom this afternoon/evening. I’ve wondered if it’s an infection of some kind, but I haven’t had any symptoms of a UTI, like painful urination.Since late last year, I’ve been noticing mucus or discharge hanging down from me after using the bathroom (it’s happened after only urinating and after having a bowel movement). Sometimes it’s hung down from my front (either first or second hole), but there’s been a few times it’s hung down from my rear. There’s times I’ll go and it looks normal, and then other times I go and notice discharge or mucus. Last month, I started noticing that sometimes instead of mucus there’s been like a white substance in the toilet bowl that kind of looks almost like a tissue, but it’s kind of curly (I know it’s not a tissue though). For several years, I’ve been struggling with constipation. Most days I’m going and having decent size bowel movements, but I often feel I’m not getting everything out. Sometimes after moving my body, I’ll have cramps, like I feel like I need to have a bowel movement, but if I go I didn’t think much would come out. What could be going on with the white dots and the discharge/mucus? I attached a few images, one is of the white dots and the other is the discharge/white tissue looking substance, and the third picture is the white substance after a bowel movement (not the same day as the second picture).I have a doctor’s appointment this month that I can mention this at.

@nicole1e19: I see from this and your past posts this has been troubling you for quite some time. As many members and mentors have noted, there can be various contributing factors at play here. Mayo Clinic Connect offers peer support so while some can share similar stories of what they have experienced, bear in mind these are all individual cases and responses. I do see several people have suggested talking to a gastroenterologist and I'm glad to hear you have an upcoming appointment with a medical provider. The clinician who sees you will be in the optimal position to evaluate your unique situation and give further recommendations.

Do you think you could bring these pictures and an outline of your history of these symptoms to that visit?

@nicole19 That’s a good idea. Perhaps you can let me know how the visit goes and what’s decided?

@grammato3 I can possibly do that, but I was wanting to see how I’m doing the next few days and if it’s still going on.

@nicole19: I got the impression from your posts that you’ve been aware of some bowel and bladder issues dating back a number of years. It is possible you’ll be doing better over the next few days however in cases where symptoms have been more chronic, occurring periodically over years, it’s best not to put off a doctors visit ant longer.

@mackvogt13 if I went to my doctor and had a urinalysis done, could that show what’s been going on? I had a doctors appointment in a few weeks, and I thought I could mention this then and see what they say

@grammato3 I have a doctors visit in a few weeks. Do you know if it’s alright to wait until then, or wait until then to mention what’s been going on with my urine and the white particles? I ordered an at home urinalysis kit that I thought I could try in the meantime to get an idea, but it’s not supposed to be in until maybe tomorrow. I’ve been considering possibly going to an urgent care though

@nicole19: A home urine test can be a good idea to see if you might have a UTI (urinary tract infection) and have a high degree of accuracy to primarily show if there are elevated levels of certain substances, such as white blood cells, nitrates or protein levels that are out of range that can be associated with an infection. You would still need to follow up with a doctor who would then likely order a more detailed test on the urine called a C&S: culture and sensitivity to see exactly what is causing the infection so the proper antibiotics or treatment can be prescribed.

However, even if the home test is negative, it does not necessarily mean that you do not need to see a doctor OR that you need to see one sooner as you have stated you're not having any acompanying other symptoms. If you develop urgency, pain, bleeding or feeling that you're ot fully emptying your bladder that would be reason to seek more immediate attention. Have you been having any of those symptoms?

You've mentioned in the past you've also had similar symptoms with bowel movements. If you're seeing a GP - a general practitioner or internist - that provider could likely assist you with these issues or refer you to a specialist if needed. When is your appointment?
