What to do after multiple surgeries from hip replacement?

Posted by 5hips2022 @5hips2022, Aug 15, 2022

Hi I need some help and don't know where to go or what to do! I'm 63 and on June 15th I had a total Hip replacement and since then I've had 5 surgeries in 8 weeks? I've had a few surgeries and never had a problem before I heal really fast and well. The first one was going well but a couple days later I new something was wrong I couldn't put any weight on it, they did a cat scan and my bone was broken the Dr said they might of hit it on the operating table, so they went in and put in a longer stem and cemented it in. After about3-4 days I woke up in bed and couldn't move, I had to have an ambulance come and get me. Then a few days later I can't get up again this time my Hip is out of the joint! the Dr then told me I had an infection and they needed to go in and clean it out, so they did and then they told me that didn't work and I had to have it removed and put an temporary Hip in and get infectious disease Infusion for bacteria so now that is what I'm doing! The Medicine is making me sick and at first it wasn't doing what they wanted, now it's starting to work supposedly. I have suffered so much in the last 2 months and I don't feel there's ever going to be an end of this! Does anyone know what other options I have? Or been here before? Thanks Hip2022

You've been through a lot - and you will get through this. Like you I had consecqutive infections, multiple rounds of home IV antibiotics, spacers, etc - for me this went on for 7 years - 13 hip surgeries later I am infection free, antibiotic free and enjoying life. Unfortunately due to deformed bones to start with and partially my choice, they could not put another hip replacement in on my left side so I had a Girdlestone procedure where they take out everything and I have no left hip joint at all - yes I do have to use a walker to walk - some do not - but I am live, well and able to do most of what I could do before. Msg me if you would like more details. Paula

You've been thru a lot too. I thought a hip replacement was supposed to be an easier operation than knee replacements. I have had both knees replaced and they were no big deal.

Has anyone had a hip spacer in for more than a year?

THR are easier than knees and generally restore a person to full mobility and life again. In my case my first few THR's were VERY successful - I was even able to put the cane away for well over a year. My issue came after multiple revisions to my left THR when I got my first infection. Don't despair things can get better. I have had 2 spacers - first one it was broke putting into place so I had a broken spacer for about 3-4 months; 2nd one was not cemented and again was in for about 3-4 months; I may have also had no spacer one time - with all the surgeries and procedures I forget! What an awful series of events you are dealing with. Nobody expects these complications. If you have an infection in the surgery site, it will take at least 6 weeks before they can tell about the antibiotics working.
Do you know what infection you have, and what meds you are on?
Are you doing sitting and lying down exercises to stay strong and keep from getting blood clots and pneumonia?

Its been a nightmare! But finally its getting a little better something I thought was never going to happen😊 its been 4 months now, only one month since the drainage and swelling quit. I'm so afraid of doing something to compromise my recovery, I have phantom draining I'm constantly feeling my leg!
I have to have the temporary hip replaced and just can't imagine all this again? But I'm not going to let it beat me I'm having the surgery in January hopefully a new year will be better!

Hi I just got done with the antibiotics came home in a wheelchair , moved on to a walker and now trying a cane

I asked my Dr yesterday how many people had 4 hip surgeries in 6 weeks and he said none but me and he's had a lot of surgerys in his career ! Physically I am ok mentally its been a struggle .
But I'm bigger than it and I will get threw it. Thanks for all your support

Really feel for you. I had two in a month and two more a few painfully awful years later. Didn’t go back to divorce would have been two more closer together. The last implant goes to the knee and it was necessary to shave down hip and cut four + ligament and muscles to get it in. Never told about it, surgeon died and records passed to another who supposedly knew EDS but never told what happened until I saw the X rays when my hip dislocated. Removal of led mentioned then. Treated myself and avoir docs. Walked out of a couple surgeries because I felt like a slab of meat being carved.
Learn all you can on I-net even videos of surgeries and remain analytical. Make your own choices. You can walk out of OR until anesthesia hits.
BTW I live on a 17 acre horse farm, care for my three horses (ride) and wait for the next big event at 80 yo. Make out wills and all on line so there is nothing left for the system to take.
Life is a crape shoot. WIN IT!

I am so glad to hear you are making progress - this has been an awful journey for you! I'm amazed that you have graduated from wheelchair to cane so quickly - nothing will stop you now.
Will you let us know in a few weeks how you are doing?

Ships,

You have more courage and strength than 1,000 normal" people combined. After all you're been through, your positive attitude is uplifting and should be uplifting for us all.

Question - was the temporary hip put in until the infection cleared? That makes sense to me. Infections are rare but they happen. Sounds like they identified the bacteria and antibiotic. I assume you're gettin that through an IV. Same thing happened to me after surgery on a broken finger that got infected.

Get well, stay strong. Are there exercises you can do ahead of the surgery? Ask your Dr.or a PT.

You're gonna be fine. This miserable world desperately needs people like you and your upbeat attitude in the face of physical hardship. Good for you Ships. And thank you.

Joe
