What Vaccines can you get with Mac and Bronchiectasis?

Posted by sl63 @sl63, Nov 29 8:19am

I wondered what Vaccines people with Mac and Bronchiectasis get? I have never gotten Flu or pneumonia, shots, and had a reaction to the covid shot, so didn’t get the 2nd one. I’m nervous about the RSV vaccine too. Dr.’s recommend the vaccines, but some, like the pneumovax23 say people with heart or lung problems shouldn’t get it. I’m confused! I was going to start with the Flu shot. I also just went through 8 weeks of treatment for Aspergillus, which of course we don’t know for sure if it’s cured.
Thanks

My treatment for Aspergillus is 6 months which I thought was the standard. If you are cured after 2 months I envy you and wonder what treatment you were on? I would give anything to be off this treatment but I still have 3 months left.
I have received RSV, FLU, Shingles and Pneumonia with no issues. I know everyone is different but the vaccines need to be spaced apart which your pharmacist would know.

My docs have recommended that I stay up to date with vaccines and I’ve had the flu, Covid, RSV and pneumonia ones. I’ve had the expected side effects with small area of redness at injection site, fever for a day or two (more with Moderna than Pfizer Covid vaccines), and some body aches. I really didn’t react to the last flu shot except for sore arm. I view the fevers and achiness as a sign my immune system is working and recognizing the vaccine. Of course, severe reactions are possible in quite small numbers and you’d need to seek medical care if those happen, but they’re not likely.

My reactions, though some for a day or two, haven’t been even close to the severity of the diseases themselves. A few years ago, my sister-in-law was unfortunate enough to get H-flu and influenza at the same time (after holiday gatherings) and ended up in ICU on a vent for a few days. She was in her 60’s. Now that is close to a worst case scenario, but those two illnesses usually cause a few to several days of being really sick. With our bronchiectasis, we’re higher risk.

@tconz I was treated for 3 months for Aspergillus in fall 2022. The first month was rough, especially because my lung doctor had told me to stop Advair. When He told me after 1 month I could go back on it, it helped a lot. I also took OTC Pterostilbene (Nutricost brand on Amazon is good and well priced). Prterostilbene (extract of buleberries) is allegedly a very strong and broad antifungal. The last 2 months of treatment were MUCH easier and it has not returned to this day. Best wishes of great health!

I really appreciate the info on Pterostilbene and I hope you continue to be free of any recurrence.

My doctors recommend annual flu and Covid, which I already was doing. They also wanted me to get the pneumonia vaccine, though I am under the age at which they generally recommend, but given the BE/MAC, they thought it important, so I got that this fall. They did not recommend RSV, my understanding is that even with lung disease I am below the age threshold recommended for RSV. But only by a couple years so not really sure why they draw the line there. But I generally still mask inside when in public, never dropped the habit since Covid, and haven’t had a respiratory virus since (knocking on wood!) so not going to push for the RSV, at least not yet. I did get the shingles vaccine earlier this year, before I was aware of the BE/MAC. I am not sure I would make that same choice today. I am not vaccine adverse, obviously, but do think each vaccine needs to be individually evaluated for risk v. benefits.

I was treated with Voriconazole for Aspergillus Nidulans. We won’t know if it’s completely gone until I have another Bronchoscopy, which won’t be done until after I do the MAC treatment.

Thanks everyone for letting me know which vaccines you got. I was wondering which Pneumonia vaccine you get? At the I.D. Dr. The P.A. Recommended the Pneumovax23 and the P.A. at my pulmonologist said Prevanar23

Did you have a cavity as well and what strain of MAC do you have? Both my Pulmonolist and NJH did not waver on the full 6 months treatment but felt Aspergillus was more important to be treated first in my case of course. My sputum samples were all coming back Negative for 13 months for Fungus and MAC but the Bronchoscopy found both which was surprising and quite disappointing. It is always a roller coaster but I try to stay very Positive and Focused on trying my best and that is all any of us can do.

No cavities, lots of nodules. I have MAI.
My I.D. Dr. treated the Aspergillus 1st too, but she believes in doing the shortest time , said sometimes it’s worse to over medicate. I can’t cough anything up, so can’t do Sputum testing. I just Pray the Aspergillus is completely gone. What Aspergillus and MAC do you have?
