What Type of Doctor do you see
I was wondering if most of you see an Endocrinologist or Rheumatologist? I was seeing an Endocrinologist then went to a Bone Fracture Service my local hospital offers as part of their ortho department and a NP is the one I see. She has given me more information than the endocrinologist ever did .

Endocrinologist. The trick is to get one that is knowledgeable and up-to-date on osteoporosis. That's not easy. The level of expertise is all over the map.
My PCP managed my Fosamax prescription for five years. After I fractured in 2023, she referred me to a rheumatologist who wasn't much different.
The rheumatologist ordered a couple of basic tests but didn't perform any in-depth testing or even a physical exam. I was dissatisfied with her care so I went back to my PCP and requested a referral to an endocrinologist at the Stanford Bone Clinic.
The endocrinologist has provided far superior care and performed many additional tests and a physical exam. I feel like I am in good hands now.
I’ve always been treated by a rheumatologist. She does thorough exam, has me get Dexa every two years.. recently, after only one year because I fractured ribs, and keeps track of all my health issues, whether they are related to my osteoporosis or not. Guess just need right dr for each of us.
Mine is a gem Glad you found one too
I have an endocrinologist for my thyroid and a rheumatologist for my osteoarthritis but the doctor that is treating my osteoporosis is a retired ob-gyn physician who see’s only osteoporosis patients.
I think we have to continually ask questions no matter who we go to . I started watching you tube videos and hearing about TBS testing with a DEXA so I asked if I could have that test and was shocked to find out the major hospital imaging centers here do not offer it because the hospital will not pay the money for software and train people to read it because they get paid so little from insurance for DEXA scan . I have also never been offered bone marker testing .
I've seen a metabolic bone specialist who is also an orthopedic surgeon, an endocrinologist and two rheumatologists. The one I currently see is a rheumatologist who specializes in osteoporosis and she's the best of the bunch.
It was my gynecologist who first sent me for a dexascan and prescribed Fosamax. After that med caused GI issues I was sent to a rheumatologist who sent me home with pamphlets of medication options and told me to call with my decision. I never went back. My endocrinologist has been handling my bone issues (as well as a thyroid issue) and so far I have been satisfied. Coincidentally, I had my dexascan today and will see the endocrinologist at the end of the month, so we shall see how that goes….. I suspect that I will be back on this forum reading up on some new medication to replace the risedronate.
You probably have more information than your endo.
Hi,
I am curious where you live. The bone fracture service is very interesting.
Thank you
