What prostate surgeons and hospitals does anyone recommend

Posted by mike0157 @mike0157, Aug 7 8:09am

Has anyone had any experience with a Vipul Patel, MD for surgery in Fla? It says he has done 19,000 robotic prostate surgeries. is that even possible? Can anyone recommend any surgeons they thought or heard were great? Did anyone go to MD Anderson, Sloan Kettering, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo or Moffit?

Thanks

@ellen45- Also in Sarasota. Just had biopsy done at SMH by Dr. Kaplon. Would you mind sharing which doctors you are using at SMH - Jellison? Thanks, Mitch.

Mitch,
Dr. Kaplon is my husband, Doug’s, doctor and he is wonderful. Very talented. Dr. Guancial is our oncologist she is with Florida Cancer and Dr. Saigel is our radiologist. The radiology center is on Fruitville and a beautiful new building, but Dr. Saigel will be moving to the new building which is attached to Jellison. Dr. Kaplon’s office is next to the hospital and Dr. Guancial will be moving to the new building (she is now on Golf which is downtown). We have ha incredible care from them - if you check out all of their backgrounds you will see. Dr. Guancial is the lead. There really is no reason to go any place else. SMH is building a very fine cancer center. My husband is 82, Gleason 9 and Decipher .99. All of them were just incredible, friendly, kind, etc.
Doug did not have surgery but Dr. Kaplon did his biopsies and was terrific, even though the results were not good. Please try them out - and don’t hesitate to say that Herbert Stine recommended you to them! (His full
name is Herbert Douglas Stine). Please let us know how it goes - lots of hugs to you!

Thank you so much for your warm reply. My experience with Dr Kaplon and his staff has been great. My situation is a little different than Doug’s. I was lucky to have been diagnosed early, with Gleason 3+4, group 2, so I have some options. I’m awaiting results of the Hopkins biopsy review and Decipher. My brother has metastatic PC, so I’m heavily leaning towards surgery, understanding the side effects. While Dr Kaplon does DaVinci robotic prostatectomy, and I have confidence in him, I have the opportunity to have Dr Ash Tewari at Mt Sinai NYC to do the surgery. I would still need a support team back home, so your post was very timely. I have a telehealth appointment with Dr Kaplon next week and I’m hopeful he’ll continue with me even if I go see another surgeon.

Mitch,
You are very welcome. And you are so lucky to have a lower Gleason with options. Surgery was not an option for Doug. Decipher is very important and helps all/any doctor determine what your treatment should be. I hope everything’s works out well - I lived in NYC for many years (and worked in the fashion industry) and know that the doctors there are excellent - the difference here is that the doctors make an investment in you because they treat you for the duration. Dr Kaplon is terrific and I am sure he will agree to do what you need. Right now you are in a perfect position to have treatment and be cancer free! Please let me know how you do. Ellen

I had surgery with Dr. Patrl seven weeks ago. He was recommended to me by the head of the urology department at the Charité in Berlin. The surgery went well, negative margins and apparently good nerve sparing. That said, I still have low to moderate incontinence, complete ED, and climacturia. But it’s still early days…

He conducts about eight surgeries a day, four days a week. He does all the critical parts of the surgery himself, but works in a team. You will only see him twice, on your first visit and the morning after surgery. For everything else, you will be in touch with other members of his team.
