What prostate surgeons and hospitals does anyone recommend
Has anyone had any experience with a Vipul Patel, MD for surgery in Fla? It says he has done 19,000 robotic prostate surgeries. is that even possible? Can anyone recommend any surgeons they thought or heard were great? Did anyone go to MD Anderson, Sloan Kettering, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo or Moffit?
Thanks

Those two sites will help you. The first one is from Da Vinci, the people who make the robot, and it tells you how much experience your doctor has on that device - a lot of the data is collected from public Medicare sources, but it still gives you a good idea of their experience compared to others.
The second is an overall review of your surgeon and how they perform relative to others in your vicinity regarding the treatment you need - in this case prostate cancer treatment and surgery.
I use the second one on every doctor I consider as a regular doctor. Doing this I generally end up with the best doctors in my area for whatever it is I need them for.
I had surgery with Dr. Patrl seven weeks ago. He was recommended to me by the head of the urology department at the Charité in Berlin. The surgery went well, negative margins and apparently good nerve sparing. That said, I still have low to moderate incontinence, complete ED, and climacturia. But it’s still early days…
He conducts about eight surgeries a day, four days a week. He does all the critical parts of the surgery himself, but works in a team. You will only see him twice, on your first visit and the morning after surgery. For everything else, you will be in touch with other members of his team.
Thank you, very helpful.
thank you and please keep us posted on your recovery.
Regarding ED it is recommended to create erections with injections to avoid atrophy of the penile muscles. two week wait before starting
When I was first diagnosed and looking at treatment options (I ended going with RT), I asked a friend who is a cardiologist who was the best prostate surgeon in the state of Florida. He gave me two names, the first was Dr Patel.
Sample of one here.
I had a great experience with Dr. Christopher Weight at the Cleveland Clinic (and with the Clinic in general). I was stage T1C (3+4, 6/12 cores, 0.56 Decipher) after my original biopsy and PSMA scan, but my pre-op MRI showed EPE so Dr. Weight tested a frozen tissue sample in that area during my surgery to help ensure negative margins. He also performed PLND (all 15 were negative). My recovery has been extremely smooth - I was up walking the day of surgery, only took Tylenol for two days, mostly as a precaution, and started running after four weeks. I ate a fairly strict Mediterranean-keto diet for a few months and got in really good physical shape prior to my surgery, running 5-6 days per week and weight training 3 days. I also started Kegels about eight weeks prior to surgery and saw Pelvic Floor PT for three weeks during that timeframe. I have been about 99% continent since my catheter came out despite a relative lack of post-surgery Kegel and diet discipline (not a total slacker but nowhere near as strict as pre-RARP). Although I was disappointed that the post-op pathology changed my staging to T3B (same Gleason) based on EPE, SVI, Cribriform, and suspicious but unconfirmed IDC, I think Dr. Weight's approach was ideal for my situation and am very satisfied with my surgical outcomes.
I also met with Dr. John Ward at MD Anderson and Dr. Ronney Abaza at Central Ohio Urology. Dr. Weight and Dr. Ward both had warmer personalities than Dr. Abaza but all three inspire confidence and it's hard to argue with Dr. Abaza's experience and results. Dr. Ward uses a Retzius-sparing technique with pre-op MRI. He told me he doesn't typically perform PLND because he doesn't consider it worth the risk of lymphocele (not sure if that would've changed based on MRI results). Dr. Abaza uses an anterior hood technique (no MRI) and always does PLND.
Thank you. What about ED so far?
We live in Sarasota and we are extremely happy with our oncologist, radiologist and urolgist. They work together as a team and are part of the Jellison Cancer Institute at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. It is a brand new building. Check it out.
@ellen45- Also in Sarasota. Just had biopsy done at SMH by Dr. Kaplon. Would you mind sharing which doctors you are using at SMH - Jellison? Thanks, Mitch.
