What is safest drug to use after Evenity treatment?

Posted by swsunflower @swsunflower, Jan 31 11:51am

Have taken 2 Evenity treatments. It's going okay so far. My doctor is suggesting Prolia to maintain. I've seen a lot of negative about Prolia. Is there a safer alternative?

@swsunflower: I have intense interest as I am further down the Evenity Road - my 9th injections tomorrow! My internist is touting Prolia, but I will avoid it like the plague! I too want to learn the best osteoporosis drug to hold my (hopefully) strengthened bones from deterioration. Please include me when you get “our” answer! Thank you in advance.

I ran into a friend I used to work part time with and was telling her about my osteoporosis. She is 82 and still works 3 days a week. Told me she has been on Prolia almost 3 years and has never felt better. She used to take Fosomax. She is a small woman and you would never guess her to be in her 80’s.
I have been diagnosed with high risk osteoporosis and have already had one compression fracture. Dexa score -3.7. I’m 77 and starting Evenity this week.
Wish me luck.

I finished Evenity recently and My doctor recommended Recast for 2 years (one dose per year). I was not interested in Prolia. There are other options besides Prolia.

I finished 1 year/monthly Evenity and Mayo and my Endocrinologist in Colorado agree Reclast once per year for 3 years to hold the growth. I am looking forward to my Dexa Scan! I am wondering how to avoid side effects!!!

I had great results with 12 months of Evenity gaining 15% spine and 8% femoral neck. The following year I locked in with weekly alendronate and the gains increased to 23% spine or -1.6 and femoral neck also increased to 12.4% to -2.8 and I was ecstatic BUT after the second full year of alendronate I lost close to half of those gains so Spine is now -2.3 and hip -3.0. My baseline before any meds was spine-3-1 and hip baseline -3.3.

So alendronate did not completely lock in evenity gains. i have not fractured. I have maintained all the healthy lifestyle habits including collagen with fortibone and calcium and vitamin D, lifting walking etc.
So I find myself back on another course of evenity knowing I may not get the same gains. I tolerate it fine and luckily have no other health issues myself but my husband has been ill and so I certainly have lots of stress. That is the only thing I can account for in the loss.
Right now I am thinking reclast after this year of evenity. I am not interested in prolia (yet) I’m now 69 and just trying to take one day at a time. Cannot find anyone to prescribe any type of hormonal treatment. Thinking about consulting with Dr McCormick.

@csuhilty thank you for sharing. Did your friend have Evenity? I'm on injection #6 myself.

@debhatchell
No she had been on Fosomax.
Which she had issues with.
How are you feeling?

I'm doing okay. Really struggled for the first few months with incredible bone aching and headaches. I'm used to the headaches now. Bone aching is much less. NO injection swelling. I've gained 10 pounds, but not sure if the weight is related to Evenity. I started losing hair after a couple months. Started on Biotin and collagen (AlgeCal). Not sure what med my doc will put me on after the Evenity. My Dexa was a -4.2 so I'm hopeful this was a worthwhile effort.

@clj9821 This sounds interesting having Reclast once a year for 3 years. Do you have to take anything after that? I have refused all osteo drugs for 30 years so am doing some research and wondering about Evenity. I am also wondering about the drugs that have to taken after which I have already refused.

@hikernurse Sorry to hear about this loss in BD into the second year. I have refused all Osteoporosis drugs for 30 years, I am 64. The osteonecrosis of the jaw has always put me off starting these drugs but thought I would do some more research into Evenity which was recommended 2 years ago after a fall which caused a fracture. I started an exercise program at the end of 25 with an Exercise Physiologist that teaches the ONERO program. I have researched that our bones do heal so that has given me a bit of hope starting again my exercises after the fracture the end of 24. I hope you find something to help so you do not lose anymore BD.
