Holidays & Celebrations: What helps to stay positive?

Posted by Parus @parus, Dec 6, 2017

I have been in the community for a while and have read many comments. I am curious as to what helps others when it comes to the Holidays. I enjoy baking for others, decorating my houseplants with Christmas lights, making things for others and designing my own Christmas cards. A few of the things I enjoy this time of the year.
The largest obstacle can be maintaining a positive attitude due to physical/emotional limitations. I have found encouragement, support and helpful information here at Mayo Connect.

I do not have room to entertain so I do goody bags for the places where I shop the most. It is rewarding to see how these hard-working folks are surprised. I also play secret elf and it is so much fun!!! I bake and put music on. Remaining positive is so very important for any of us with depression and chronic pain. I cannot always get the things completed I would like to and this is okay. I do have my ups and downs altho I am not bipolar. Dark and negative thoughts worsen physical and emotional pain. Baking and doing art for others as I can keeps me moving more. By afternoon I go caput. Yup, it is afternoon. Do hope those here are doing the best they know how.

Love also the Elf concept...I am experienced in receiving that in the last month. Still am not aware of who or how gave me a scheduled tour of the White House from the date of my birthday until the date of my husband's death 3 years ago. And, they want to know the name of the guest I am bringing? Like to thank them and this invitation came to me on a down afternoon? Love it, and don't know who? Also, I make scarves, shawls for people. This year I am late, not finished. Got to give up the GUILT and get all done by New Year's! Always a good idea to get rid of guilt...doesn't get scarves done, delays them. Thanks, giving is filled with so much Joy and we need to be able to received also.

I left cookies for one of the new residents and a note was left on the main door thanking the "secret elf". How nice! A small thing that helped boost my Christmas spirit that had started to wane a bit. Little things mean a lot 🙂

You all are inspiring me...got to get going being an Elf. It's colder in D.C. right now, people need sweaters, blankets. Good to "Elf" closets today!

@AgentDarien and @parus

It sounds like the secret Elf idea is growing and taking root right in our midst!

One more thing. This grandma did complete the dinosaur painting for her grandson. Will get it in the frame today and spend Christmas resting for Christmas with some of the family tomorrow.

Hi Parus, I clicked on your profile image to get a bigger image of the dinosaur. It is amazing! I also love this bio you included in your profile. "I do enjoy being creative in many ways. I am a real person and my various maladies do not define me." Well said!

@colleenyoung Thank you. The profile picture is a cropped version. The original is 16 x 20 and now framed. What I will do for my little buddy. He has a stomach bug on Christmas. Poor little guy :(.
