What help is available for very slow motility?

Posted by virgina @virgina, Aug 18, 2024

I’ve been searching, for over two years, for help with chronic constipation and slow, to no motility. I’ve tried numerous, expensive, prescriptions, and Dr. said surgery is only option. (I had a Sitz Marker procedure to diagnose low motility) The only relief I get is with Magnesium Citrate. I have, most of my life, had problems with IBS-C but could always solve it with over the counter support. This Doctor is my second opinion. My first Gastroenterologist told me there is nothing that can be done-take Miralax
. I’ve had 2 CT scans with contrast which showed a redundant and torqued colon plus severe constipation. I would love some alternative ideas to increase motility, before having to have surgery.

I posted Aug 30 about how my constipation of 2 years had left and my bms were normal. That lasted until recently when I had a bout of diarrhea. I’ve now had 3 non consecutive days of unexplained diarrhea. I’m putting my salads on hold for now. It only last one day, then leaves. Has anyone had their constipation resolve, only to be interrupted with bouts of diarrhea? So bizarre.

Have you tried dried ginger root caps to help with motility? If you decide to try it you want a brand that is high in gingerols like Mountain rose Herbs (higher quality than Spring Valley) or Spring Valley brand (Walmart).

I know it helps with digestion in the stomach and small intestine but not sure about the large intestine. I take a cap after every meal to help with a slight nausea feeling. If you are diabetic or on blood thinners this supplement is not for you as it thins the blood and might interact with diabetic meds.

Hope this helps!

I am curious if fresh sugar ginger slices would work the same. I have C IBS, MS for many years and last tests showed actually No motility. I have had constipation for quite awhile and they tried linzess And another super expensive drug. I will try some of these new ideas I have found on this site. Currently, I have built resistance to most OTC meds and now dependent on digital stim as well as suppositories. So much constant belly pain and bloating is my life. Thank you for any opinions

@suela1858 ,

Since that post from September last year, I’ve had improvement. I haven’t had a return of the diarrhea, though I have resumed eating daily salads. And fresh fruit.

For some reason, I have started going to bathroom without constipation and without taking anything. Not even Miralax. I am shocked! I started going to the bathroom and actually trying to go, even with no urge. Surprisingly, I usually have BM almost every time and every day. I don’t strain but try. Hope it holds.

Oh, Halloween last year I had a colonoscopy and it was normal. So….I don’t consider myself to currently have IBS…..can it be cured? Idk. I hope my improvement continues.

What are you trying now?

I’ve felt very discouraged before with my constipation. It seemed nothing I did worked right. I would go when taking Miralax, but it was like Jello. I felt it such a burden to have to drink that every day and to have that consistency. I feel very blessed that I have relief right now. I do believe my lifestyle helps. I hope yours improves too,

It is also critical to look at your diet. Fiber ( I eat raw vegetables, fruit and I check all foods for fiber content) is definitely needed and helps with motility. And be sure you drink enough water, especially if you drink coffee and alcohol. I've learned you need a glass of water for every cup of coffee and every glass of alcohol. But also be aware that our digestion slows down as well age.
