Just diagnosed endometrial adenocarcinoma: What can I expect?

Hello! I'm 55 years old and I've been in menopause for about 2.5 years and after a week of cramping and some discharge, I got a "period" again. The bleeding/spotting/ cramping started Dec. 2023 and hasn't really stopped! I met with my family doc in early Jan. and she ordered an ultrasound and a biopsy and I received results late last week - endometrial adenocarcinoma. She referred me to the cancer centre in my city and now I'm left to wait for that appointment, with my own thoughts, and I'm scared. My doc also mentioned something about bowel/ colon cancer and that really has me concerned - I'm waiting to get another appointment to gather more information. I'm trying to balance enough and too much information so that I can approach this journey informed, hopeful and practical. If anyone has sage words or is willing to share their own story, I would be grateful. I have an incredible husband, family and faith community I will lean on as I learn more. Many thanks from Canada.

To canadiangal55, I was also diagnosed with Endometriole adenocarcinoma in Nov 22. I had a radical hysterectomy Feb 23. In May I began 28 rounds of radiation, with 2 vaginabrachy therapies in June. I also had 2 small chemos of cisplatin. In July I began 4 large chemos, which ended Sept 23. I was a 3C1 with clear cell carcinoma. Since my grandmother and mother both died from late-stage colon cancer (neither had rad. or chemo), and I have had Endometriole, I believe Lynch Syndrome is in my mother’s family. These cancers occur depending which of 4 DNA repair genes in that part of the body stops expressing (not sure what stops the expressing, and when, beyond genetic predisposition). So if your doctor mentioned colon cancer, or other gynaecological cancers, this is perhaps why.
Anyway, the radiation caused fairly minor trouble. There was one incidence of vomiting lasting 4 hours and one of severe diarrhea lasting 1.5 hours on two separate evenings a week apart in May. The second vaginabrachy caused terrible itching for 4 hours that night. Other than that, the large chemos caused neuropathy in my feet, and I gained weight, putting pressure on my legs. It’s March 24, and I still struggle going upstairs and getting out of chairs. Otherwise, I’m fine and clear of cancer. Good luck 😉

I’m 69 years old and was diagnosed February 2023 with stage 1 grade 1 Endometrial. Had total hysterectomy in April 2023, follow up in June all clear and again in December all clear. Had no other treatment. I visit the cancer clinic every six months for 2 years for follow up. So far no more issues 🙌🏼

My suggestion is to keep monitoring past the two year mark. My sister had the surgery, chemotherapy but no radiation for the same issue. Hers was judged to be Stage 2. Her reoccurrence came near the end of her 5 year follow up. She was told by the second team who treated her that she should have had some general radiation to clean up any rogue cells that may have been hiding in her surgery scar tissue (apparently chemotherapy can’t get at those cells). I hope that you remain cancer free and don’t have her experience but if you notice anything even slightly amiss see a good oncologist right away. Do everything you can in the way of diet and exercise to stay healthy. Wishing you continued good health …..

Hello, @canadiangal55,

I see that you had a colonoscopy scheduled for 2/2 and an appointment with your gyn-onc was scheduled for 2/27. You might have posted more in another part of the forum, but I don't see those at this moment. You have been in my thoughts and I have been wondering how the colonoscopy went for you, how the appointment with your gyn-onc went for you on 2/27, and how you are feeling now about your diagnosis and any treatment plan that is emerging. A lot of wondering! All of it is accompanied by hopes that you received good news or at least clear, understandable information about what's needed and how you might move toward healing. Sending best wishes your way...
