What are your experiences with tramadol ?

Posted by Always Hopeful @AlwaysHopeful, Jun 16 7:42am

I have been taking tramadol for over 20 years. It was first prescribed for knee pain. This was the era when they did meniscus surgery. I'm sure the medication is not effective for me now, but it continues to be prescribed. Any other thoughts or experiences?

I have found that Tramadol 50mg has been a big help to me with my slipped spine. I try not to take it unless I am in a flare up or in so much pain I have to as I want it to work I do not want to develop an immunity to it. But it does not make me sleepy and I like that as well. I feel like its a safe drug for me. I will also take couple tylenol with it with pain over an 8

Oxycodone. Gabapentin, Xanax.

Are you taking all of these? Did Tramadol not work?

REPLY

Yes I am, but now cutting back on Gabapentin, and the Tramadol did not work to relieve my pain.

Best and only medication that resolves my pain. I have taken this drug on and off sunset 2004. I can take as needed and there are no side effects for me. I am 75 and would have a life much restricted by pain if I did not have this drug. I fear Cymbalta, Lyrica etc as they mess with my head and cannot be taken on an as needed basis. Everyone is different. I hope you find what works for you.

Sounds like you are doing well and that's a good thing. I agree with you about Cymbalta, but don't have an opinion yet about Lyrica.

I also take this combination for pain of peripheral neuropathy. Been taking these for about 4 years, although I've had the PN for over 20. Sometimes I also need to take aspirin especially for weather-caused arthritis. And at night (also sometimes in the afternoons) I have to take Ropinerol for Restless Leg Syndrome. It is a lot of medication but the option is lots of pain with more mobility challenges than I already have. I'm a 77 y.o. female, with otherwise manageable health issues as long as I stay current with my wonderful doctors and their wise orders. Like you, I am not wanting to develop an addiction but I believe my medical team is "on top" of signals. I wish you the very best in finding what works for relief of your pain.

Hi...I'm James. I had a low back injury several years ago, and was given a Toradol (ketorolac) injection to help. I was prescribed Ultram (tramadol) orally to help with the pain. I took the prescribed dosage and developed pseudoparkinsonian symptoms. I shook like a crack addict on a bad day. After the Toradol wore off, the symptoms subsided. I spoke to the doc about it and the consensus was I couldn't have both, but either one by itself was okay. I've taken tramadol successfully for back pain several times since then uneventfully. I'm scheduled for a visit with a neurosurgeon vith view to low back surgery aince nothing else helped long term, and an MRI showed several blown discs in my lumbar spine. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I wonder if this reaction is unique to you. If common, the doctors need to know about this.

I have chronic back pain - had surgery 6 years ago- have things between disks and a metal cage, and last winter got the back stimulator. I have tried tramadol in pill form, and it made me very sick to my stomach, especially if I had to ride in a car- dry heaves, sweating, etc. I tried just using it when real bad, and I just stay home, but had to stay laying down the whole time. The stimulator is helping about 50% of the pain - still take Motrin about twice a day, and 2 pills of gabapentin. Gabapentin was the most helpful while I waited to get the stimulator, and I don't have any problems taking it, except sleepy. So many things I need or want to do, so I keep pushing the boundaries and of course pay for it with more pain. When it gets bad enough I learn to sit still. I have other health things, but this has been going on for about 15 years. I wish you well.

I think it's natural to push on our boundaries! I've never heard of a back stimulator and I'll have to look that up. The best to you as well - it's quite a journey.

I started out taking tramadol for fibromyalgia pain and it has been increased to 4 times a day at 50mg plus to 500mg of Tylenol with it. It has very little effect on my pain. I am glad it works for some of you. I wish I could find some kind of pain relief. Any suggestions let me know. Thank you.

I just started with Lyrica and it seems (fingers crossed) to make an impact on my pain. I have Cervical Dystonia and head tremors. I still take 50 mg of tramadol (2 tablets) in the evening when I start getting a headache that progresses to a migraine if I don't pay attention to it - tramadol, Tylenol, dark room. Hope this info helps.

Love it!
though I only take it episodically. As a heart transplant patient I am banned from all N-saids. And as a very active old fart I occasionally get some muscle and joint "discomfort". Tramadol gets me over the hill.
Best always,
s!

Well, you have a good sense of humor about it. Would love to know her intent. Have you considered asking her ?

Always hopeful,
She would say that it is protocol. I noticed on the EOB from Medicare that her office charged $300 for the pee test.
