Walking aids for elderly carrying portable oxygen concentrator
Are there any safe walking aids my 84 yr-old hubby could use while carrying-around his POC? He needs some type of support due to becoming less stable walking from room-to-room. Says he's afraid he'll trip on a cane or using a rollator. Has pulmonary fibrosis and severe kyphosis. Has lost a lot of muscle. Not strong anymore. Can barely get up from his recliner or any chair.

I found that when using a portable I frequently felt off balance so using a cane would be dangerous. However, a rollator provided the support I needed with added benefits. I could sit if I needed to, there was nothing by my feet that would cause me to trip, it goes where I guide it effortlessly. I can apply brakes anytime. God Bless

4 Reactions@ravenup Follow-up on this. The physiotherapist who was running the pulmonary rehab program I was in said definitely that I should NOT use a cane because of the instability issue. I use a rollator.

3 Reactions@grrranny, have you considered making an appointment with an occupational therapist. An occupational therapist can help with adapting to new medical devices and mobility, including new skills needed for daily living. They can work with your husband to restore, maintain, or improve his ability to perform activities such as dressing, bathing, and moving around more easily with oxygen.
You might ask for a consultation with an OT.
