UTI Prevention

Posted by summernole @summernole, Mar 29, 2023

I'm sure this has been posted before but I need to know how to help my 91-year-old mother keep from getting several UTI's a year. She had one this past February and fell. She got another one this March. She says she cleans herself well and we just started D-Mannose. Is D-Mannose a good preventive supplement? What else can she take? We will be seeing a Uro/Gyn if they will take her insurance. If not, we will get her in with a general Urologist. She gets confused and foggy minded whenever she has these UTI's. She has a tendency to fall with these UTI's. She has no obvious symptoms other than confusion and falling.

I see this is an older post, and you may have resolved the issue- my uro-gyn nurse recommends using
a prescription vaginal estrogen cream 2x a week, (amount as you find it on the package), if UTIs continue she would prescribe a low dose daily antibiotics, this is based on my health status -

Thanks. Yes, she is on the vaginal cream, daily, and takes a low dose antibiotic daily. These two have really helped her.

I am 74 and for a few years had suffered from repeated UTI's. Usually about 6 per year. I got a bidet about a year ago, use it each and every time I go to the toilet and never had a UTI since.
I have encouraged my Doc to tell all of her patients with UTI's to get a bidet. I had read it on the internet somewhere that the majority of UTI's are because of E.coli.

I’m so glad you mentioned this. I’m 64 yo woman and I’ve been getting them so bad. Recently I got one and had to go to the urgent care. I happens to have looked at my test results as they never discussed it with me. And one thing was it said I had E. coli and that’s what it’s from. They never mentioned it. I got so extremely sick with this UTI. It affected my whole body. Throwing up stomach bring so bad. Then the med they gave section makes me so much more sick. And it just keeps starting over again. My other tests results were alarming too and again they’ve never even followed up with a call or any such thing. I’d have not know at all if I hadn’t discovered they were in the app Tue local hospital uses. I’m so concerned because I’m still feeling so sick. I need to find a new primary care Doctor to get help. And I hate picking some random name off a list. I need a doctor who will hear me. And want to help me get well. Thanks for “listening “.

Get yourself a bidet. It cannot hurt you. They are only about $50 or so. Use it every time you go to the toilet. It's likely not going to help the one you have, but in the future you might find that you have less or none at all, like me. My doc said that the older we get, the skin gets thinner, and dryer and everything kinds of comes closer together. I had no idea. Also, I thoughtI was very very clean, and wiping perfectly, until I started using the bidet. Then you can really tell if you are, of if there is any stool remaining.
I know you are miserable with this Jamie. It's so so painful. Cindy

Just an update on my Mom. In late 2023 she was placed on the vaginal cream (daily) and the low dose antibiotic (daily). She has only had one UTI since. She had 7 in 2023, 1 in early 2024 and none since then. A true blessing.
