Uterine cancer/hormones

Posted by cholita @cholita, Jul 7, 2022

Twenty years ago I had a complete hysterectomy after being diagnosed with uterine cancer. I lost hormones and was plunged into menopause from hell. The loss of hormones has caused thinning of hair and skin. My Dermotologist and Endocronologist recommended hormones. My understanding was that because of my cancer, hormone replacement was not an option. It seems frivolous to worry about hair and skin, but are there others options?

@cholita. Hello and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

I'd like to understand your question better. What happened to your skin and hair following the hysterectomy and early menopause? Are you wondering at this point if there are alternatives to hormone replacement treatment (HRT) to improve your skin and hair problems? And finally have you talked with your gynecologist or your primary care physician about what you can do?

Thank you for your response. My beautiful hair came in very sparse and curly; curly is fine, but sparse and balding are not great. My GP recommended wigs and my Dermotolagist recommended Rogaine. They all initially said I needed HRT until I reminded them of my estrogen related cancer.

@cholita It's lovely that your hair came back curly but sparse and balding is not. I'd feel the same as you and would be looking for some ways to grow back hair or alternatives. Were these recommendations from your GP and your dermatologist made recently or twenty years ago? So many treatments in medicine have changed that I'm wondering what is available to you now. Are you thinking about herbs or minerals that might be helpful?
