Urostomy Bag and Dialysis
I have Stage 4 CKD GFR 15 CKD. Recently my GFR went down to 10 then up to 12 - to 15.
In 2015 I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer when I was being treaated for Glomerulonephritis. After MVAC chemotherapy and
a Radical Cystectomy, the following year my GFR went from 99 to
30. I believe it is because now when one gets megadoses of Chemo,
there is every effort to dilute the chemo to a certain level by hydration.
I am now looking at dialysis. I am doing as much reseach as I can, as
I would prefer peritoneal dialysis as opposed to hemodialysis. The
hospital where I am being treated said ai cannot do Peritonneal
Dialysis with an Urotomy Bag. Another Hospital where I had the RC
says if there isn't a lot of scar tissue in the tummy, then peritoneal is
possible. Has anybody been in this situation? Patty PCLG

I am on peritoneal dialysis. Prior to the catheter placement Dec 2021, the vascular surgeon did an ultrasound to "see" the prospects of a successful procedure. In 1999 I had a hysterectomy; that was my only abdominal surgery. I personally would defer to the surgeon who will do the possible catheter placement. Each person can be different. Scar tissue, which I had more of than they were expecting, can be a factor. It resulted in placing my catheter exit site higher, close to my waistline.

Thank you so much for this information. I have a zoom appt with the doc who told me that
he didn't think the RC was such a big operation as to cause too much scar tissue. I will know
more on Monday. Your response was very hel[pful. I wil go to Kidney and Bladder and look

1 Reaction@walpi1945 Well, let's be sure it is the renal cancer, first. When I had a suspicious area on my right kidney, we followed it with routine ultrasounds. Measurements, and high-def pictures as much as we could. Since my kidney function was already compromised, I couldn't do contrast exams. Eventually the urologist determined it was a cyst, by comparing the activity of the area. We had planned on removing that kidney after I started dialysis, if need be. I still have my right kidney...

2 ReactionsHi Ginger, I didn't make myself clear. I have had Glomerulonephritis for the last 23 years, though chronic the last 5. I have had all the tests to see of the flare up was caused by the presence of cancer. So far negative.
I have received PETS for last 10 years because I had bladder cancer. They have all been "unremarkable".
I hav not had contrast dyes during these scans. Thank you so much. I will keep you posted.
