Hello @breckord, Welcome to Connect. I believe the purpose of the HoLEP surgery is to help make it easy to empty the bladder and solve the frequent urination problem.
"HoLEP removes the entire portion of the prostate that can block urine flow. It can be an option to treat a severely enlarged prostate. The treatment provides a lasting solution for an enlarged prostate — a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)." --- Holmium laser prostate surgery - Mayo Clinic: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/holmium-laser-prostate-surgery/about/pac-20384871
Are you considering having HoLEP surgery?
possibly.......I'm going to discuss it with my Physician
Can you have a Mayo physician send me confirmation that HoLep addresses excessive urination...Thans
@breckord, I'm a patient like you and have no direct access to Mayo physicians. You mentioned you were going to ask your doctor about it. What did your doctor say about the HoLEP procedure?
I'm sure you can contact one of the appointment offices and ask your question. The contact information for Minnesota, Arizona and Florida can be found here http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.
@breckord, Mayo Clinic Connect is an online community for patients. Should you wish to consult with a Mayo physician, you would can ask the question through the Mayo Clinic patient portal if you are already a Mayo patient or request an appointment here: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
According to the Mayo Clinic website https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/prostate-laser-surgery/about/pac-20384874
Prostate laser surgery helps reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH, including:
- Frequent, urgent need to urinate
- Difficulty starting urination
- Slow (prolonged) urination
- Increased frequency of urination at night
- Stopping and starting again while urinating
- The feeling you can't completely empty your bladder
- Urinary tract infections
@derhundsturm @tlk1951 @calluci may also be able to offer their experiences with HoLEP surgery.
You may also appreciate this video with Dr. Chandler Dora, a Mayo Clinic urologist, who shares more about benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), otherwise known as enlarged prostate, and the various treatments available. He discusses the value of HoLEP surgery - holmium laser enucleation of the prostate - and how it can benefit certain men.
thank you very much!!
Hello Breckinridge.
I had the holep procedure on 2/20/2020 with doctor Dora at Mayo Jacksonville. The results were amazing and I have been pleased ever since. Only thing is you will have retrograde ejaculation if that is important for you. To me being able to urinate like a 20 year old was worth the surgery and overnight stay in the hospital. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Had HoLep procedure last November. Since procedure have progressively been unable to effectively empty the bladder after being awakened while asleep. During the day am able to urinate. Currently awakened 3 to 4 times per night with urges to urinate that may be a weak or no stream at all. Not getting much sleep. Scheduled appointment with urologist two weeks ago. Performed a scope of the urinary tract and found no obstruction. Filled bladder with fluid until emptying of bladder occurred. Prescribed oxybutinin, which has been taken over the last couple weeks without any benefit. Doctor’s office recommended taking medication for another week or so to see if conditions improve. Anyone who has had a similar experience after HoLep procedure? It seems the urologist that performed the procedure is at a loss to explain a why or provide a solution.
