Upset stomach, abdominal pain after Reclast infusion
85 year-old hubby has been having upset stomach abdominal pain the last 2 days after having Reclast 2 days ago. Complained about it after dinner the day of the injection, during dinner last night, and felt so bad didn't want dinner tonight. How long will this continue?
He already has multiple problems, with severe kyphosis and 2 kyphoplasties due to several vertebral fractures, plus pulmonary fibrosis -- for which he's on oxygen.
Has lost much weight and muscle mass. Can only eat small amounts.
Any suggestions?

Has he had any reaction like this before to one of these injections before or is this his first one? does he have any other symptoms other than like an upset stomach/nausea not wanting to eat because this could just be a reaction to the injection that needs to wear off. he might have some cold symptoms for like three days
@mackvogt13 Thanks. He had no reaction to his Reclast two years ago, or his 12 Evenity injections before this latest Reclast. So this is puzzling, and unexpected.
Especially concerning, because he is more frail now, needs to eat more and gain some weight.
I had Reclast many years ago and also Fosomax and had the stomach issues. I had Prolia .. within the last 5 years. My brain doesn’t remember time well. I had stomach pain like with a stomach ulcer. It passed by using the Pepcid AC (store brand is what I use). I decided not to ever have a bone scan again because I don’t do well with the medication. Just do the best I can with food and chewable vitamins.
I have learned as I have aged that things change. Our bodies just do not respond to medication as they should. PPIs such as omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantoprazole (Protonix), rabeprazole (AcipHex), and dexlansoprazole (Dexilant).. should help him with his stomach pain and it might take a few weeks for it to heal. I would take Pepcid AC ( I use store brand version) first … or possibly along with it .. your doctor or pharmacist can help you on how to give for best results. Pepcid AC will work more quickly than the PPIs .. no prescription needed for most of these, but you might want to talk with his doctor first. It could be something more serious.
Food .. I have had several stomach surgeries and no fun trying to figure out what to eat. A dietitian might be of help.
Not only does surgery change how and what you eat but other conditions can also slow digestion. Digestion slows as we age. Faster with some than others.
I fill up easily. I eat several small meals a day. Salt if he can have it can stimulate his appetite. Most salty foods are bad for you .. cracker with cheese (hint sharp cheddar is more digestible than many other cheeses) Salted nuts or a bit of peanut butter. .. a little at a time. Give him easily digestible foods. You can find list with a search.
Sweet Potatoes are one of my favorite foods. Plenty of nutrients in them. I have the baked whole (but can only eat about half of one sometimes only a couple of tablespoons .. depends on what other food we are having) .. I cannot eat the skin, but it gives the sweet potato a good flavor. My husband is the cook and he sometimes peels them and chops them into thin fries or in chunks coated in oil and baked in 425° oven until done. When I cooked I would add carrots and regular white potatoes in with the sweet potatoes in chunks .. add any suitable vegetables you want. You can probably use an air fryer. I know nothing of these newer cooking appliances.
Best wishes,
