upset caregiver: what do these results mean?

Posted by scared2 @scared2, Aug 4, 2021

My spouse was diagnosed with Throat cancer 2 years ago. Since then has been Cancer free, hasn't missed any of the post check ups. Had a ct scan a week and it came back with a small nodule in the lungs. Has a pt scan and cant get the results for another 10 days. I saw the results......"impressions" 1.5 cm spiculated nodule upper lobe intensely hypermetabolic consistent with pulmanary metastines.

2. a smaller 5mm nodule along right major fissure also suspicious.

3.Mild activity w\a nonenlarged mediastinal node and both hilar regions nonspecific-maybe reactive vs metastic.

3.Hypermetabolic activity is noted in a testicle. More testing is needed.

4.hypermetmetabolic activity associated with peribronical vascular ground glass opacification which is likely inflammatory or infectious. No hypermetabolic activity in the throat.
Is this good or bad news?

@scared2- Good morning. One of the reasons for sharing our stories is to give hope, such as Becky's post about her neighbor's cancer.
I too have a long history of lung cancer that began in 1997. I have had 2 lobe resections, chemo, both proton, and photon radiations and I have had 6 tumors and am being watched for one cancerous one in my lower lobe. Not one of my doctors has stated predictions in years. But I have survived for 24 years this October. My last treatment was 4 years ago!

Your husband doesn't want to know the results? Oh, my. If you tell him that you need to know because then you can prepare to help him and provide what he needs would that help?

We went to the lung specialist and found out it wasn't about whether or not he had cancer. It was about if the biosopy could be done. To find out what type of cancer he Has and what the best treatment for it. The lung specialist strongly suggested it was from his previous cancer. The throat cancer usually does metalize in this amount time. I asked if he could tell us how long he has it. He looked at his ct scan in Jan.,that scan was clean. Also lung cancer doesn't appear that fast. After looking at his present scan, he couldn't safely do a biosopy.

@scared2 Well, it sounds like you don’t really have any more information now than before the “biopsy.” Did you get any helpful info at all? It could be a metastasis o his earlier cancer and not a new one, but you just don’t know. Was your husband present at this meeting? We’ll just keep @merpreb ’s good thought with us, as she goes thru the hurricane. She’ll answer when she can.
Did the doctor suggest a plan of care or what could be done now?

Like Becky, @becsbuddy, posted I too am sorry that you were not able to get more information. However, it is good that he has referred your husband for a bronchoscope procedure to determine the type of cancer.

How does your husband feel about this procedure and biopsy? Is your anxiety lessening at all as you go through this process?

Hes very anxious. I would say, kinda calming but not alot. Scheduled for sept. 8. I would say, that the drs want to be sure for his safety and doing it right. For the correct information its worth the wait. We learned quite a bit that day, not necessarily about my husband cancer. But about cancer in general. And chemo.

@sacred2, I'm so glad that you had a doctor that gave you a lot of information so that you could proceed without great fear. I know that cancer is fearful enough but a calm, teaching doctor helps so much. Please know that I will be hoping for the best for you both.

Do you and your husband have a good understanding of the procedure that will take place next?

I look forward to continuing to hear about your questions and concerns as you approach September 8.
