Unclear diagnosis but symptoms are much like Ulceratice Colitis

I am 63 and was a healthy man until 60 when started with urgency and frequency to pass stool. Thigs have gotten worse and sometimes I have to run to the bathroom more than 15 times a day. It is affecting my quality of life and don't know what next step to take.
I have a very good GI doctor and failed to respond to already 3 trails of different medication.

I was also having to run to the bathroom 15 times a day. My gastro doctor put me on 3 capsules of budesonide (3 milligrams) in am and Lomotil (2.5-0.025 mg) 3 times a day which stopped me having to run to the bathroom. I am having normal bowel movements. The only drawback is that budesonide is a steroid and you can’t stay on it very long. It is also making me shake inside and out. I don’t know what he will change me to yet. I should know by the first week of March. It is possible that he will prescribe prednisone which has several side effects. I am getting diagnosed at Mayo by the end of this month. I hope you get straightened out.

Does doctor know the CAUSE of the diarrhea? Maybe I missed that in an earlier post. Try taking cholestramine (Questran) powder morning and evening. But not within hour of eating or taking meds. And only if the diarrhea is caused by something like Crohn’s Disease which I have had for decades. And the cholestyramine stopped it in 2 days, if not sooner. Talk with doctor but I bet he/she will scoff at it. Are you constantly dehydrated, btw? Good luck to you.

The diagnosis is rectitis, also known as proctitis, but it doesn't appear to be either Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis. I already failed to respond to two biologicals and mesalamine. The only thing that brings some transient relief is a hydrocortisone enema, but I need to find a more long-term solution because my quality of life is going down the tubes. I am a very active person who enjoys life.

@claudiod When I was diagnosed 30 years ago I was told that I had ulcerative colitis. Many years later I found out it was Crohn's. So I'm not sure that the diagnosis that accurate however like I Told HopesSeeker, I am just now on low dose Naltrexone for my Crohn's and also my several autoimmune diseases . I encourage you To read about it and then find a doctor who will give it to you. It is get it good for your immune system and for any diarrhea in your system. Give it a chance, it might be just what you need. I get no side effects from it.

Thank you for the tip on Naltrexone, which I thought was used for addiction. Is that the only medication that keeps your symptoms in check?

@claudiod Have you had your stool tested for bateria or parasites and/or a colonoscopy? Microscopic Colitis can only be detected with a microscope through a colonoscopy.

Yes, have had any test you can think of and even saw an infectious disease specialist. All negative except high protein in the stool, Calprotectin level 990, which is double that of a year ago.
