Tymlos vs Prolia

Posted by pam0930 @pam0930, Feb 23, 2023

Bone specialist recommends Tymlos daily injection for me saying it is the best option at this time. After using it 18 months, Reclast once a year or every other year. Why is this treatment better than the other option, Prolia which seems to be widely used.

Tymlos is an anabolic: it builds bone with little or no effect on bone turnover, so it is quality bone. Forteo is also an anabolic.

Prolia is an anti-resorptive, meaning it affects bone turnover, reducing the rate of bone break down. Reclast and other bisphosphonates are also anti-resorptive.

Evenity is both bone-building and an anti-resorptive, though anti-resorptive to a lesser degree than Prolia and Reclast.

So Tymlos and Prolia are entirely different. My doc says it is much better to start with Tymlos, if your bone density is significantly low, not only because it builds bone but I have been told that it is more effective if you have not taken Prolia or a bisphosphonate.

Tymlos has an adjustable dose, using the pen, and to avoid side effects, I started with a low dose and moved up. But many don't have side effects. YOu can discuss that with your doctor.

Has anyone experienced any difficulty giving themselves the daily injection of Tymlos?

Good evening @pam0930 and welcome to our busy forum of Connect. This is a place where folks learn by sharing experiences with medical conditions and treatments. Have you just started on Tymlos? What has been difficult for you regarding the injection?

I completed two years on Tymlos and had no injection issues or side effects. Are you using your abdomen for the injection and staying two inches from your belly button? I think that is the recommendation. There may be "injection equipment options for you". I am now taking an anti-itch medication by pen injection in my upper thigh. I try to count to 10 waiting for the injection to finish.

Would you be able to share a bit more about your osteoporosis situation?

May you have happiness and the cases of happiness.

@pam0930 I think the main problem for some people with injections is mainly fear. It is not unusual to be afraid of needles. As Chris said, best place is abdomen at least 2 inches from belly button. Pinch up and then let go, and count to 10. It really becomes like brushing your teeth.

Very interesting comment. Thank you.
Does anyone know if bone can continue to grow ( with Tymlos or other drugs) after taking Fosamax for 5 years (2007 to 2012) ?
I was just prescribed Tymlos by my GP and am not eager to start.
Thank you

I have heard that Tymlos does not work well after Prolia. Not sure about after Fosamax though I have been told there is some effect on the effectiveness of Tymlos after bisphosphonates. Hope the Tymlos helps you!

I have been using Tmlos for a year and the recent Lipid Panel results showed increase in my LDL value. I am taking 5 mg/day of Simvastatin. Has anybody experienced this? If so, have you increased your statin daily dose? Thank

I was supposed to start taking prolia but cannot bring myself to take prolia or fosamax due to the risks of femoral fractures and jaw necrosis. For those of you taking Tymlos or Forteo do you recommend? If so, why?
Thanks for your assistance!

Good evening, @osteoresearch. Welcome to Connect. It appears that you are diving right into one of our forum's great benefits: the importance of sharing current experiences from real folks who can respond immediately.

I am taking Fosamax now after two years of Tymlos. I have had no side effects and will be able to base my recommendation on the results of my Dexascan this summer.

May you be safe, protected and free from inner and outer harm.
