Tymlos side effects I've encountered

Posted by anniesan @anniesan, Oct 2, 2022

Hi. I started Tymlos in February 2022 and about a month after starting it I began experiencing excruciating muscle spasms, esp in upper thighs and feet, neuropathy, as well as debilitating hip, leg, and back pain. My doctor wanted me to try and stay on it for at least a year, but I absolutely could not go on living with the pain I experienced. I stopped taking the Tymlos completely 6 days ago and all my symptoms have subsided. Has anyone else experienced these side effects while on Tymlos?

@lhankins that's awful! What did you end up taking afterwards?

I recall there was a study conducted for abaloparatide (Tymlos) with different doses 20mcg, 40mcg, and 80mcg (for 6mo only and a small study though). Although 80mcg showed best bmd increase, lower doses were not 100% ineffective - results showed a dose-dependent fashion.

While users of Tymlos should strive for the the marketed dose 80mcg to achieve maximal therapy results, dose titration upwards at the beginning of the therapy for those who experience severe adverse effects proved to be a great way to get 'accustomed' to Tymlos. Many members here at Connect had done so - @windyshores had many posts describing the method.

Yes, that was the first trial of Tymlos. They found that 40 mcg helped the spine after 6 months, but did not help the hips. I took 40 mcg for 9 months. My spine went from -3.3 to -2.8 and there was no change in my hips.

I've been on tymlos nearly 2 years, at 5-6 clicks due to side effects. I've had improvements in hip and spine. Dr recommends reclast next, to lock in improvements...but the side effects seem to be worse than those from tymlos ! Amigas, what are my alternatives ??

maradeur, while you may not experience side effects with Reclast, you might ask for another year of Tymlos. Some doctors are prescribing a third year and you probably have more to gain.
I'm on the biosimilar, Forteo. The endocrinologist I see has suggested that I remain on Forteo until I'm at a T score of -1. These anabolics just build the best, most integrated bone.
Most experience a three day flu-like effect and ongoing joint pain with Reclast, but they don't have to inject themselves everyday. But if you have the extreme experience with Reclast, there is no getting it out of your system.
What is your experience like on Tymlos at 5-6 clicks.

No, but that is frightening. I started taking Tymlos in January and haven’t had any serious side effects. I have noticed a bit of lightheartedness after injections and a slight headache. I do worry about any long term side effects, as I’m supposed to stay on this Med for 2 years.

Has anyone had increased liver enzymes or weight loss with Tymlos?

I've been on Tymlos for 10 months and have had strange issues for the last 3 months. Any ideas?

Bone specific ALP rises in serum reflecting bone formation and mineralization. Your panel measuring ALP includes both the bone and the liver enzyme. together. If you weren't taking Tymlos your physician might look for liver disease.
In your case the elevation is anticipated and is a good measure of the medication's effectiveness.
Most of us gain belly fat on Tymlos, but some lose weight.
But what about your strange issues, Maria77?

Thank you for your reply. That's encouraging. The main issue has been weight loss and, it seems, muscle loss. My back hurts which seems to cause nausea at times. The newly diagnosed scoliosis has dramatically worsened in the last year as well.
