Tymlos at 70+ - Pros & Cons with severe osteoporosis

Posted by harryboy7 @harryboy7, May 27, 2025

I am 70, and have severe osteoporosis, I have had several fractures over the years. Recently I developed a t8 mild compression fracture. All my life I was super active, biking, hiking, swimming, skiing, I am vegetarian. Have lived a healthy life style. In my 60's my body started breaking down. I am so depressed.
My Endocrinologist wants me to go on meds. I have severe osteoporosis (had a recent Dexascan). Will medication even make a difference at this stage of my life ? Will bone classes about Osteoporosis even make a difference? The more activity I do, I get stresses fractures.

Tylmlos is the med my doctor wants me to start. If I can't afford that, the second choice is Reclast. So afraid of side effects. Tylmos builds bone. The thought of injections are daunting.

I haven't seen much feedback from the discussions regarding Tymlos. Would love your thoughts. Is it worth going on a medication at this point?

BTW: I sent a previous response and would like to add the following: I totally understand that it can be depressing to go from being healthy to being in the current circumstance. Part of the responsibility is on me because after menopause, I never had a bone density test. I assumed that eating healthy, being a non-smoker, non-drinker, physically active person (running, walking, gardening) would keep my bones in good health. It's true, life is not a dress rehearsal and I can't go back and redo. All I can do is move forward. The spinal fusion has created additional life altering mobility limitations for the rest of my life. All of this combined caused physical and emotional distress to the point where I thought I was having a mental health breakdown. I was blessed to have an aunt who helped me talk about my fears and get me back on a spiritual track; and, a I found a therapist to help me get over some other personal issues that had surfaced. The point is, find someone to talk with about your fears, be honest with them, don't let whatever fear about life and/or life limitations take away joy. Find something each day, no matter how small, to be thankful for, and be like a Timex watch--"take a licking and keep on ticking"

Probably the only people who don't think that Tymlos is a better drug than Forteo are me and anyone allergic to the preservative (phenol) that makes Tymlos easier to travel with. Tymlos is said to be less likely to cause hypercalcemia. And it builds a little more bone in the hips.
The 24hr urine is cautionary as is the serum pth. Are they ordering bone markers P1NP and CTX.
I'm glad you are determined to power through and hope it proves uneventful.
If you do encounter problems there's always Forteo.
Best wishes

Thank you so much for your encouragement and advice.
It’s good to know that Forteo is a decent alternative if I have a reaction to Tymlos.
I don’t have my lab test requisition on hand, but I’m having the labs done tomorrow, and hopefully the results will give me insight as to why my severe Osteoporosis has occurred.🙏🏽
