Tumors found and belly is swollen! Doctor says nothing to do til chemo

Posted by djvl @djvl, Feb 20 7:11pm

Greetings,
Writing in hopes of finding out if something can be done re a friend's horribly swollen belly due to tumors just found in last 2 weeks. He has been told that there is nothing that can be done but to start chemo. I fear that he won't make it that long! Surely something can be done to relieve the horrific swelling going on in his belly... Thank you... dara

I would not think that Chemo will have any effect on the liver tumors in the short term.
And chemo will certainly not clear a bowel colon obstruction in this lifetime.
Having said that, the swollen belly thereby, remains swollen without any relief.
If I have ever heard of a case needing a 2nd opinion quickly, this is it.
Find a Colorectal and Anal surgeon to get a consultation appointment first. All attention should be given to clearing the obstruction and not what an Oncologist thinks!
Sitting around waiting for chemo to kick in is a long term process that will not keep this gentleman alive.
Colon obstruction relief NOW !

Hi Paul,
Thank you so very much for your words... As i am outside of the loop, my best idea is to share your sentiments with one of his best friends and hope that he may get Stacy to listen...
Thank you for writing...

When I was diagnosed (via colonoscopy) I had a partially obstructing stricture. I had surgery first because of the stricture. I developed an obstruction while on chemotherapy. It required surgery again. They can put him on TPN (IV nutrition) so that he stays hydrated and nourished. Throughout my 7 month battle, I was almost always on a nothing by mouth diet (I couldn’t even have ice chips) because they needed my bowel to heal
I was very tiny but they kept my weight up by giving me 3,000 calories per day. I even did this at home once I was released.
Stay positive and keep asking questions

Hi...
TPN can't be started until the oncologist has her say... Apparently the tumors are very large and have metastasized; that is why they insist on chemo first...
Thank you to each person who has responded...
His oncology appt is tomorrow, Tues, 145p...
Nancy says that he wants to live!!!
Blessings,
