I have used Trazodone for 35 years, after my twins were born and I couldn't sleep. It did make me very groggy at first, but that side effect wore off after a few weeks to a month. It’s one of the safer meds to take for sleep. Since I have taken it for so long, I have to take breaks from it sometimes so it will continue to work. You may want to give it a longer try before you decide it’s not for you.
I don’t have trouble falling asleep, but would wake up in the middle of the night and then have trouble getting back to sleep. Trazodone has helped me sleep through the night. I haven’t experienced any grogginess issues.
My neurologist thought it was a great idea, because it helps both insomnia and migraines; my PCP told me that since I'm on Linzess for constipation, he would expect a call from my pharmacist pointing out that trazodone has a known common constipation side effect, and the two drugs would fight one another. He wants me to wait to see how effective the Linzess proves to be (just started a week or two ago) before revisiting the combination, which makes sense to me.
If we don't go that route, I'm going to ask to try ramelteon. I now take low-dose doxepin and melatonin daily (which I would stop if I start ramelteon, of course) and ambien as needed, which is typically 2-3 times a week.
I’m taking Trazedone per my GP’s recommendation. My sleep doctor had recommended 5 mg of melatonin which helped some in making me sleepy but I didn’t stay asleep. I was not cycling into rem sleep. I also suffer from neuropathy. My GP said that Trazadone was first developed for depression for which it didn’t help. But the researchers discovered that it did help sleep as well as neuropathy. So, she felt like it would be a good fit for me. It is definitely impacting sleep in a very positive way. I can’t tell if it is helping the neuropathy pain except to keep me sleeping through it. I ve been on this regimen of 5 grams of melatonin and Trazadone for a month with only the side effect of an occasional weird dream, it’s working well.
It's hit or miss for me. Sometimes it helps and other nights not so much. Taking it with 2mg of melatonin helped. I heard its sleepy effects are the strongest about 20 minutes after taking it, and it helps to take it with a snack. I ate a cup of yogurt first.

Has anyone taken trazadone for sleep. My doctor gave me a low dose but not sure of side affects. I don't really like taking pills. Have had a hard time sleeping for awhile. Melatonin doesn't work

I tried it.
It helped me a little, but left me very groggy all day.
To me, it wasn't worth it.
Yes, I use it with other sleep meds. It does help some.

I’ve had exactly the same experience. Worked well. Good Luck!
