Total leg skin pain still 21 days after left knee replacement

Posted by zoobird1 @zoobird1, Mar 9, 2023

I had total left knee replacement February 16 and had much bruising from the top of my thigh to my ankle. I understand this is normal and the visible bruising has almost faded but my skin is so very painful and very sensitive to touch. It hurts as much as the knee area even with Naproxen, Tylenol and 5 mg of Oxy.
Is this typical?
Thank you. Beth age 69

I thought the diclofenic gel was just for joints. Did it help your lower leg pain as well?

Absolutely. I just applied it to the area where the skin hurt and it was effective - and very quickly.

I do have Voltaren 1% gel and am looking into the 8% cream. I wonder which is more effective, or if there is any difference.
I so appreciate your input.

There’s a very significant difference. I believe Voltaren is diclofenac but the otc cream isn’t nearly as strong (1% vs 8%). I’m in Canada & need a prescription for the 8% ointment. I find it very helpful & it works to reduce pain:m/discomfort within minutes for me. I hope it might be helpful to you as we.

I know how really painful & sensitive that bruised area on my leg was for me. Mine didn’t last as long as yours has (I don’t think) but I was really grateful to get relief. It seemed to be worse at night. Really glad that’s over. I’m almost 8 weeks post-surgery now & doing pretty well. Largely doing everything I need to & getting on with life. Planning for the second surgery to get the other knee done. Not looking forward but I know it will be better & after 2 or 3 wks the worst should be over. Best wishes to you.

And to you! Thank you again.

The skin around my knees was numb to the touch for months after the TKRs. This is common and it has resolved within a year. But pain? That's new to me but seems to be related to numbness/nerves so I hope it resolves in time. Have you tried Voltaren gel? It should help and is OTC now. what does your surgeon say?

Sounds like you did the work to have a successful outcome. Good for you. I did pre-hab and post-hab. Was off the walker at one week and off the cane at two weeks. I'm leg pressing 300 lbs, 4 sets, 12=15 reps. All is good.

Just ran into a friend at the gym who had TKR four weeks ago. He was still using the walker and complaining about the at home re-hab. His flexion was 97. My guess is that he didn't take the re-hab part seriously. That's a shame because those first two weeks after TKR are critical and ya have to do the exercises. They're boring, but easy. Unless there are other problems, the walker shouldn't be necessary after two, maybe three weeks.

Anyway, good for you. For anyone needing inspiration, I'm 68 and this was a life changing surgery.

I saw my surgeon this morning and he said everything looks great and that the extreme pain is bruising due to the tourniquet they use during surgery. I am doing better since I posted this the other day. I did use Voltaren gel 1% prior to surgery and plan to resume when wound heals. Thank you for your reply and encouragement.
