Total knee replacement still hurts after 5 years

Posted by garbear1951 @garbear1951, Oct 7 1:50pm

I have had a TKR in 2003. Recently had THP less than 1 years. Had ganular nerve ablasion and ganular artery procedure with no relief. Doctor is reluctant to do revision because of infection issues. MAYO, Jacksonville won't see me because they didn't do the surgery and Emory in Atlanta, Ga to far to go. I live south of Savannah, Ga. Don't know where to turn.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Joint Replacements Support Group.

I have never before heard of Mayo refusing to see a patient potentially needing a revision. They are busy so it is sometimes hard to get a referral approved.

It is a little farther away but the Hospital for Special Surgery has a branch in Palm Beach and one of the surgeons there is the one who did the partial for Lindsey Vonn that enabled her to go back to international championship level skiing.

So sorry to hear, I had my TKR 8yrs ago and the pain has been so bad, I had a revision 2 yrs later and the pain remains terrible. Over these 8 yrs I have been all over the east coast and have tried anything with no relief. But the search continues, I am now trying ESWT , only 2 sessions so far and doctor ask me to give 6 sessions before I decide if it’s helping. It’s not easy living with this but you have to keep moving and mediate. I don’t know if there is an answer out there but I will not give in KEEP MOVING

Have any of you TKR patients tried hyaluronic acid supplements? I use HA about once/week for my painful knee, trying to avoid TKR. (I get gelcaps from Amazon - 70mg - "Injuv Hyaluronic Acid"). Would love to hear if anybody besides me, gets knee pain relief by using HA) I understand that some drug companies now offer an injection for knees that contains HA, but I get good results from taking a small amount orally.

I have similar issues chronic pain. 5 major surgeries. I’m seeing an orthopedic pain management doctor next week to discuss a lovera procedure which freezer the nerve or a nerve block per my orthopedic doctors request.

Has anyone suggested a peripheral nerve surgeon?
Ortho docs won’t! They will just send you to pain management knowing it could be a nerve problem.

I am in a similar predicament. Would it be possible to find a different health insurance coverage. Private preferably. That is what I had to do. Some health insurance is not sending the best message to care for patients.

Don’t give up keep fighting for the care you deserve. If possible go to ER they can take blood panel tests , MARS scans to help you prove your in pain , deep tissue injury is difficult to see on most any tests, and if it is the implant causing pain. Do research and check with the joint journal of orthopedics organization. They also have studies to help find why this implant is so painful.

Also check with your Primary care physician to help you receive appropriate care and schedule tests to help find a better path for treatment and diagnosis.

They just can’t wash their hands and give up on your treatment. Be your own self advocate and learn as much about the process of rehab , implant types and surgery as possible. Sending blessings your way.

I did have the HA in an injection and it only helped for about 3 weeks, may look into the pill

@bebe68 Good to know that it helped. I haven't met anybody who had the injections, but I do know several who take the gelcap of "Injuv" HA, including me. It makes sense that it would deplete over time. Let us know please.

I’ve had a nerve block last week and I’m still holding up fairly well. I’m scheduled to have lovera procedure this coming Tuesday. They tell me it could relieve the pain for 3-9 months. Praying it will. It doesn’t fix the problem I have but it should relieve the pain. At this point I’ll be more than satisfied with that. I’ll keep you posted
