Family member found out she has breast cancer! How can I support her?

Posted by asnz8088 @asnz8088, Sep 3, 2023

Today one of my family members found out she has breast cancer and the doctor said she should be hospitalized. The only person she spoke to was me and I couldn't say anything helpful to her. I'm also a nursing student but at that moment I got confused! Now I want to be emotionally supportive of her, If anyone has a useful idea I would geld to hear it.

Ge the book, "The Big Ordeal, understanding and managing the psychological and emotional turmoil of cancer" by Cynthia Hayes. It's about all cancer, to just breast cancer and I found it very fitting to my own breast cancer process. It's well written, easy to understand, sectioned so that you can easily skip parts and read what's timely for you . Get one copy for you and one for her. I found, still find, it very helpful and I wish I'd found the book sooner in my own process. Best wishes and good luck.

This Cancer Journey can be a roller coaster of emotions!! Allow your Family Member to express how she feels, when it comes, as there are days where she will not be okay emotionally, and understanding she needs a safe space to feel. This is all part of the healing process. 💕💕

My daughter-in-law gave me a book during my cancer journey that was helpful. It is called UPLIFT the author is Barbara Delinsky.
It contains stories from women who have had breast cancer. It starts at the beginning of the cancer journey and walks thru aspects of treatment and what these women felt emotionally and how they handled each step of treatment.
I am 2 years post cancer and still read it.
Hugs to you both

I really appreciated the people who brought me plastic containers filled with pre-cooked meals. I appreciated the people who did my dishes and brought me groceries. Flowers were nice, too. Someone even gave me a Catholic relic.
