Total Knee Repair Revision: A Success Story

Posted by ezas123 @ezas123, Aug 4, 2022

Hi all I I am 1 week out of revision today . I must say this recovery has been so different from my first. I have so much more movement in my knee …. My leg goes straight….. my flexion work in progress but I was at .70 right out of surgery ….. I was there a year after tkr…..struggling of course with inflammation which I expected….I am icing and going to my therapist to help with edema…. I started pt this week also so you know how it goes take to where you can than push little more…..the pain really sucks going through this all over again I have not forgot the pain from last time … but the difference is I know I am seeing results already….even with the pain for right now I am so glad I did revision….. good luck to others going through and might be going through this .

Hope you are doing well. In response to the rod in your femur. (Mine had stress fracture + hematoma in quads from ruptured blood vessels) related to MUA pressure and put me back 12 more weeks. How were you after the rod insertion procedure? I will be having that + removal of scar tissue and adjustment of femoral component in November.

Several doctors have told what a good surgeon my femur doctor is. I had a complete fracture of my femur . . .still don't know why it happened. I have had no problems other than time for it to heal which I think is going nicely. If I did a revision on my knee they talked about removing the rod and putting in some attachment which sounded risky and scary and I got the feeling from the revision surgeon he didn't want to do it. What frustrated me is he did n't just come right out and say that I just had to surmise that. I was really put off by him.

You are correct surgeon do surgery….,,Hence mua your numbers are awesome my new dr who I think is awesome would not consider mua with those numbers…..mua does set you back swell up , sore … for me did nothing in the end except cause few extra weeks pain swelling…. I know most people want there life back yesterday some of us takes more time …. Took me two years and had to adjust to new life …..you can give yourself more time just keep on exercising and strengthening and stretching….if you are wrong size mua trust me will not help you get any further…..good luck whatever you decide to do …..but it does take time

4 weeks post MUA. What I have learned: Shout out loud and clear and seek 2nd opinions when you don't think things are right. My numbers may have looked good on paper, but my knee didn't retain the ability to flex or extend on its own. Pure torture in the 3x/wk PT for weeks until I insisted on the MUA. Had to talk to surgeon for about 45 minutes as he was on the fence that I needed it.

We are not numbers to be evaluated from. If your new knee doesn't work at 6 weeks- get LOUD. I didn't know better. The surgeon wanted to postpone my MUA and I had to remind him that research showed it worked best under 12 weeks. I insisted that he fit the 10 minute procedure in his schedule so I could have a working joint!

My MUA has me much more flexible, and probably where I should have been post-op long ago. I am starting to return to my life (surgery was over 15 weeks ago. And I am seriously considering NOT having my other knee done.

There should be communication between PT and the surgeon.

That’s great are you able to retain the gains you are getting now ?

What were your symptoms before the revision surgery? How long had it been since your TKR?
I have had both knees replaced. That was 2 year ago. Now, I have swelling on both and one feels like it is trying to move out of place. See surgeon in a few weeks.
Thanks

@fef

I had both knees done at 75, with great success and I’m now 90 and they still work fine.
In point of fact, was it luck, or just that I picked the right surgeon?

Yes! PT knocked me down to 1x/ week now. I will be graduating soon!!

I can get to 120* on my own, and further with a strap. 2-3* extension.

Prior to the MUA, I had PT take pics of my starting #s before warm up to send to my surgeon ( different state). I was at 90* and 7* at the start of therapy! So disappointing and non-functional although PT could crank it to 0* and 120s*~ major pain even with 5 mg oxycodone on board.

I now can walk and ride my bicycle, stairs ( going down) are finally getting easier. No more anterior pain in middle!! No more oxycodone needed. Still taking Tylenol and Motrin on a schedule, but that has reduced. I still elevate at times and use my ice machine at night. My knee is stronger but my endurance is not yet where it needs to be. I have had 10,000-13,000 step days so far again!

Love this support group. A TNA is a huge undertaking. I thought I was prepared. It has been a huge physical and mentally challenging job for sure. You need to be your own advocate.

Thanks. Btw, did you think it was the TKR that caused the break in the femur, or just curious, did you have an MUA that may have caused it?

If I understand the TKR procedure it involves the femur so it seems to me that you can't rule that out . . . but noone has said that to me. Yes I did have MUA in May of 2023 and my femur fractured in April of 2024. BTW Monday I have a phone consultation with my femur surgeon to discuss my frustration with my 2nd opinion appointment doctor who she recommended. We'll see what she recommends going forward.
