How many weeks after the surgery did you start radiation therapy?

I recently had a lumpectomy for DCIS . How many weeks after the surgery do you start radiation therapy? Would it be too late if I start radiation 9 weeks after my surgery? Thanks.

I am starting my radiation on 1/30. My surgery was 12/20. My cancer was slow growing. Is yours? The most important factors would be, in my opinion is the rate of growth and being healed from the surgery. The other consideration would be the rotation of the arm(s) to get into the proper position for the treatment.

I had my surgery on 9/27/22 and started radiation on 11/10/22. I asked my oncologist on the waiting period and she said if I recall 3 or 4mo. My cancer is her2+ which is aggressive.

Hello
I had my surgery 3/22/22 and started radiation 4/30/2022.

I had HER 2 positive stage 3 grade 3.
I had TDM1 after radiation as a preventative.
I am finished with all treatments and this Monday I am clean scan and doing amazing!
Cancer clear and looking forward!

Did you have positive residual in your pathology report? Did they remove any lymph nodes? I just got back from round 6 of TDM1. 8 more to go! Also I entered vaccine study for her2 and took my 2nd dose today. I had stage 2 grade 3.

Hello,
I did not have residual in my breast, but, I did have lymph node in diagnosis. I have 23 lymph nodes removed in a sentinel dissection.
I finished TDM1 and treatments are complete.
I delayed reconstruction to heal from everything.
I also had a latissimus flap completed as my body was not healing and this surgery worked to bring live tissue to the right breast.
Everything going well last scan was 5 days ago cancer clear!
I will now be monitored every 3 months, then 6 for 5 years in a survivorship program.
Small silicone implants for reconstruction in April.
It is amazing how our bodies can manage through the chemicals, surgeries and of course our minds.
I am blessed my body kicked some Ass and my Mind and Faith stayed steady!!
Keep us posted - you are doing all the right things.
Tomorrow are better days.

Kianaca, it sounds like you are worried that 9 weeks is too much time between surgery and starting radiation. There is no specific time when it has to start. Usually the wait is minimum 3 to 4 weeks to allow the surgical site to heal. It can take longer if you get an infection or have problems healing. Research shows that radiation therapy may be given up to 8 to 12 weeks after surgery.

Was there a specific reason for your time period to be 9 weeks? When will you start?

I also had a delay in my radiation therapy. I had an interstate move that threw a wrench in my plans. Had a lumpectomy Nov. 29. My treatment will finally begin Feb. 20. Neither my medical oncologist or my radiation oncologist seemed to be concerned, but now I am a bit bothered about the delay in treatment.
