Pain in my right hip

Posted by Sue @sue_in_delaware, Apr 6, 2016

This is my first post in the Bones, Joints and Muscles section. About 4 weeks ago I started having pain in my right hip area. I felt it as I was walking up the steps with a few grocery bags. At the time I thought I had pulled a muscle and the pain would subside in a few days, the way a simple muscle pull would do.. It has not gone away and in fact seems to be getting worse. I haven't fallen and nothing has smashed me in the hip but that's how it feels! I looked for a bruised area, but nothing on the outside.

If it's a pulled muscle, (the pain seems to radiate from my hip bone down to the thigh) does anyone know how long it would last and why it's getting worse? I mentioned this to my Oncologist at our appointment on Monday and she immediately suggested I have an MRI with contrast (scheduled for Apr. 11th) of my abdomen and pelvic area. I wonder if she thinks it could be bone mets since I have liver and lung mets from my colon cancer. She didn't give me any thoughts on that, but that's what I think she's thinking to rule it out or confirm. I'm not sure if an MRI would show a muscle pull?

Symptoms like that can be originating from the lower spine (lumbar/sacral area)

@spineaz
Thanks for your reply. It didn't occur to me since I don't have back pain. I'll look into that.
Best wishes,

In 2013 I had left hip replacement. Since I was only 57 years old, I did not even think of a bone on bone hip joint being the cause of the pain. Following the surgery I am now back to a normal life in which I do yoga daily as well as work out at the YMCA! Life is good.

@annh Good to hear your hip replacement went well and life is normal. I'm a young 63 but it has crossed my mind that maybe I'm getting old and might start having pain issues due to old age. Bummer.

I suggest you look into trigger points...simply google.There is an amazing book "The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook", by Claire Davies and Amber Davies that, if you think it apples to you is well worth reading. MUCH body pain is a result of trigger points. A myofascial release expert can also help. I have had chronic body pain, also hip, buttocks, back....and when I do this self healing therapy along with stretching after, I have no pain. My physical therapist and MD do not know of this... they have heard of this, but that is all..Good Luck!

@joidevie Thanks so much for your reply. I've never had to deal with pain other than an occasional muscle pull as I call them. They usually get better within a month. I'll look into this Trigger Point Therapy. Sounds interesting.

I picked up the MRI and report this morning. (First I called the doc's office but was told they'd call me when the results are in...huh?) Anyway the report indicates , "a new masslike lesion in the midpelvis right side, 2.4 x 2.0 cm and may be a mesenteric or serosal metastasis. Also, There is no edenopathy in pelvis. There is a bony lesion at the right iliac crest measuring 4.5 x 5.3 cm consistent with a bony metastasis. The right hip is unremarkable."]

( I guess I have to use Dr Google to find out the definition of a few of these words, since I've heard nothing yet from my doc.) Any thoughts or input always appreciated. Anyone have bone mets? My colon cancer has given me liver, lung and now this. Sigh.

Update: I'll be starting radiation therapy this week on the bone lesion metastases that's interfering with my right hip movement. They say it should only take about 10 treatments. I sure hope it helps as I'd like to start walking again.

Hi Sue,
I was just thinking about you. Thanks for the update and best of luck with the radiation treatments. Do you have far to travel to the cancer center daily?
