Testing for Amyloids with MGUS
Other than bone biopsy, are there any other tests that definitively rule out amyloids?

Hi @catalpa, Blood and urine tests can help detect signs of amyloidosis. But from my understanding, a tissue biopsy or bone marrow biopsy is the only way to confirm a diagnosis by showing whether or not there is evidence of the abnormal protein collecting in the tissue.
Has your doctor suggested a bone marrow biopsy?
Yes bone biopsy done. Thank u sooo much for responding. 🌸
Hi @catalpa. Everything I see your @name I have fond recollections of this glorious Catalpa tree in the yard of my childhood home. My dad hated the tree because it was so messy. But I loved it…the beautiful flowers my friends and I would string into necklaces, the bean pods I’d weave into little baskets and of course the enormous dump of leaves after the first frost. So thanks for the happy memories. ☺️
How did you choose the name?
When did you have your biopsy? Will you let me know what you find out please?
Amyloidosis can be tested with a fat pad biopsy. They take a small bit of abdominal fat for testing. Mine was negative. I'm 71 and have MGUS, but asymptomatic with 378 kappa and 32 kappa/lambda. High creatinine (a marker for eGFR, kidney disease) showed up on a 1/24 test and because kidney amyloidosis is a risk when someone has MGUS, I also had a kidney biopsy and it showed no amyloidosis, IgA nephropathy, or MGRS (also risks), but did show scarring from Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Turns out, it was from norovirus on 12/23. Go to the ER if you have projectile vomiting/diarrhea and high fever; by the time Urgent Care got around to me that day, the damage was done. Other than that, I have no risk factors for kidney disease. Oh well.
Soooo grateful for your response, Kay.
Warm regards,Annita 🌸
