Teriparitide side effects

Posted by lorac74 @lorac74, Nov 4, 2025

My husband has severe osteoporosis from radiation in 1978 for Hodgkins. He now has hyper kyphosis from 14 fractured vertebrae all on the front side. They are considering surgery early next year so he has been put on Teriparitide. Has anyone ever suffered from disorientation after taking the injections? This is something that has just started. He is 75 and takes other medications. I’m just trying to determine if this is a possibility. His rheumatologist does not think so. Thanks for any help.

hi, lorac74. does this disorientation last longer than four hours after the injection and is it spatial. A steep blood pressure drop is usual after the injection gradually rising over four hours. Fluids, caffeine and a little something salty before the injection can help. 14 fractures sounds unbearably painful. He's on the very best medication to strengthen his bones. Are they planning fusion.

@gently yes unfortunately it does last longer than 4 hours and somewhat spatial. I will try the fluids caffeine and something salty. It is very painful but they don’t want him on any opioids before the surgery which they think will be around Feb. They are planning on fusion but on a large scale. It will be a 2 day surgery and complicated. Thanks for your reply.

lorac74, it must seem like an endless wait until January. I have heard that salmon calcitonin can relieve some of the pain from this type of fracture, https://orthopedicreviews.openmedicalpublishing.org/article/24976-calcitonin-fortical-miacalcin-for-the-treatment-of-vertebral-compression-fractures Even opioids aren't great relief. He probably doesn't get any break from the pain. Bless your struggle.

@gently Thank you so much. I do appreciate your help. You are right there is lots of pain and very little to help it. I’m going to check into your suggestion. Thanks again!

I suffered 13 compression fractures and understand the pain. At 75 I think it would even be worse! I was on pain meds, but also found a heating pad on my back helpful.
As he heals, walking back and forth chest height in a heated pool is excellent therapy. I took Forteo and credit with saving my life. I found injecting before bed eased the side effects. Forteo does seem to perhaps effect other meds too. For example, half a glass of wine had me very loopy and face flushing, so definitely no alcohol. Also, my low dose Trazadone seemed much stronger and added to my slowed cognition and reactions the next day. All symptoms lessened over time and discontinued once treatment was finished. I have had no further fractures since Forteo and feel it is an excellent medication. Tell your husband there is hope and Forteo will help his bones heal. Good Bless you both. It was a very hard journey, but it did work!

I may try the bedtime. I’ve been doing it every morning. I’m hoping it will stop after awhile. It’s only been about a month now. Thanks so much for your help!
