Taking Tymlos but Forteo recommended
Has anyone switched from Tymlos to Forteo and had fewer side effects? I went to a new endocrinologist today. She said that in her experience, people on Tymlos have more side effects than those on Forteo. She said that there is more problem with vasodilation on Tymlos.
I have been on 40 mcg of Tymlos for 7 months. I am not able to tolerate a full dose. I have low blood pressure, am a fall risk, have fatigue and have swollen, painful veins in my legs. The original trial reported that there is spine improvement on a half dose after 6 months, but no improvement in hip. They decided to then try 80 mcg which is what they ended up with. The doctor said that the bones I have broken are cortical and it would be a shame not to improve those bones in addition to the spine. When I asked about Evenity, she wanted me to finish a course of parathyroid medicine first. She put in an order for Forteo and we'll see if insurance will cover it. I asked her if I could go back to Tymlos if Forteo didn't work and she said I could. I am scared to try a full dose of Forteo.

@ipg, I was underweight when I started these medications, so maybe I needed to gain weight? One osteoporosis specialist thought that I may have improved my DEXA just by gaining weight. Yes, the weight gain happened over the two years. Your are right, these medications can cause constipation. I eat 6 prunes every night, which helps with bones and constipation. I am very sensitive to all medications. There are others who have written that they have no side effects. Unfortunately, the only way to find out how you will respond is to try it. The positive thing with Forteo is that it only lasts for about 4 hours. If you take one shot, you can always not take another one. This is so much safer than taking Prolia or Reclast that stay in your system 6 months and a year. Some people have written that the fatigue goes away fairly quickly with Forteo. I think Forteo made me relax too much. If you are anxious, it might feel good to relax. My issue with all of these anabolic medications is that they want you to take Prolia or Reclast to lock in gains. I have decided to try an estrogen patch instead. So far it is working, but it hasn't really been long enough to tell.

Can’t take recast or prolia. Risk of MRONJ
Maybe stuck with Evista or just buy time. Did you ever consider another round of Forteo or tymlos instead?
@ipg, I have some Tymlos left. I have 2 tooth root resorpsions that will need dental work some day. I would take the Tymlos again then. I'd rather take Forteo, but my endo likes Tymlos. You don't want to try Estrogen?

1 ReactionI am 70 now. After Forteo I will be close to 73. I don’t know if the dr will even do this. Are you on estrogen
Some people who experience significant side effects on Tymlos find that Forteo causes fewer issues, especially with dizziness and low blood pressure, so switching may be worth trying, and if it does not work for you, your endocrinologist has already indicated that you could return to Tymlos.

1 Reaction@ipg, Yes I am taking an estrogen patch. I am 75, started it at 74. It was difficult to get. I had to go to a functional physician at first. Now that the black box warning is off some of it, my endocrinologist is prescribing it. She also saw my good DEXA results after taking it.
