Taking Calcium without D supplementation

I have been told to take my calcium WITHOUT vitamin D. I have unusually high levels of vitamin D in spite of stopping D supplements in 2022. My understanding was that you have to take D with the Calcium in order to absorb it but my doctor said my high levels of D already in my system are all that is needed. Does anyone have experience with taking calcium without the vitamin D component and if so, what kind of calcium did you take? Also, does anyone have any insight as to what might be causing the high levels of D? I do not take any supplements currently other than a multivitamin and calcium with D. I do not eat anything that is rich in vitamin D so it is not coming from my diet-which is what my doctor said is causing my elevated levels. Thank you

Most people don't have enough Vitamin D and supplementation is necessary. I would think that you would not need to supplement it if your vitamin D is high. I don't think it matters where it comes from that that you have it. Not sure about how K2 would fit into that since Vitamin D/K2 is the new thing! Have you asked your doctor?

@bswpb This whole matter of supplements is way complicated…many products, many claims…seeking the simple combo of calcium, D3 and K2…it is said that plant -based calcium is more easily absorbed, more similar to what we get from food (including plants)….due to my own GI sensitivity to magnesium in supplements, I’m researching the best sources of magnesium in foods. It’s best if supplements are 3rd party tested- you can check this out at ConsumerLabs. Any info anyone here can provide helps my ‘’research project’’.

@nycmusic and @grrranny Vitamin D3 gelcaps are available in every store - under different brand names, of course. They are all small enough to swallow.

Most people don't have enough Vitamin D and supplementation is necessary. I would think that you would not need to supplement it if your vitamin D is high. I don't think it matters where it comes from that that you have it. Not sure about how K2 would fit into that since Vitamin D/K2 is the new thing! Have you asked your doctor?

@bswpb - My doctor says my surplus must be from my diet except I do not eat Vitamin D rich foods. I am just concerned as to why my D is so high but my doctor is not responding to that concern.

@busymomof7 what some doctor's consider very high might not be the same as others. I have learned this about a lot of things over the years. At one point my Vitamin D was in the 60's ng/ml and the functional medicine doctor I was seeing was happy with that. Other doctors not so much! Was it very high more than once? I was a lab tech and some times the testing method has an issue and results were not correct.

@nycmusic I hear you! I have issues with potassium iodide and NAC supplements. It's really hard to find multiple vitamins without one or both! I use the SuppCo app and it works well for me!

@busymomof7 what was your vitamin D level that they considered high? To my knowledge, the only side effects of a vitamin D level > 75 is what’s called milk alkali syndrome which can lead to kidney stones .

Levels over 150 can cause vitamin D toxicity which is very rare, usually from taking way too much vitamin D. It causes high blood calcium levels which is very serious. I’ve never seen it.

I did read about a case where an elderly woman misread directions and toook 50,000 IU per day for over a month. She had no adverse outcomes.

For several years I took 'normal recommended' D-vit-dose. But then switched to 'a higher normal recommended dose'. Within 2 months I had symptoms (dizzy, and more). Blood test showed D-vit level on 133!! I had to be de-poisoned by eating no d-vit for a while! But I am small and light - only 160 cm/ 46 kg. This might be one (of more) reasons!?

@laura1970 my most recent bloodwork read 88.6 and that is without taking any supplements. I read that it can cause fatigue and also the kidney stones as you stated. I struggle alot with fatigue and am trying to figure out if this is contributing to it.

@busymomof7 that’s the highest vitamin d level I have seen without supplements. Do u take any supplements?I’ve seen a lot of sun worshippers and their vit d wasn’t nearly as high. Do u eat a lot of fatty fish? You are interesting and a bit of an
Egnima. I’m curious and will do a little research
