TAKEAWAY World Bronchiectasis Conference: thin is not in

Posted by becleartoday @becleartoday, Aug 7, 2023

The World Bronchiectasis Conference made it very clear that “thin is not in” with bronchiectasis and NTM.

Research shows that people with a Body Mass index (BMI) less than 18.5. do not do as well as those with a normal BMI or even ones who are overweight. They are less likely to convert to a negative culture with infection and have a higher incidence of hospitalization and serious illness.

There are many people who are thin and could put on weight, but maintain their practices of eating low-calorie food and small portions.

There are also those people who are trying very hard to put on weight but because of the body’s high metabolism with fighting infection and the extra caloric requirement for respiration, they find it difficult.

Additionally, there are those who are taking medications and feel nauseous or get full very quickly.

Fortunately, there are ways to address all of these issues. If you have a BMI under 18.5 discuss options with your medical team.

Best,
Linda Esposito
