Swollen stoma: Do I need to worry about this?

Posted by hheter @hheter, Dec 12, 2025

I have had my ileostomy since June. Hardly any problems at all. Tried various bags and supplies that I did have trouble with- some leakage due to quality.

Anyway, my stoma today is super swollen and seems to be protruding more than ever. The wrinkles that were there before are now just a solid bulge.

Do I need to worry about this? Will it go back down? Do I need to see someone? It doesn’t really hurt. There’s some pressure but it’s uncomfortable in the bag.. help!

@pidge32 this was helpful!
I notice that it’s small when I wake up and gradually gets bigger throughout the day. So today I put leggings on to hold it in. Much better so far. You gave me th thought that it can retract with pushing it back as the doctor did so I think this will help hold it in and keep the size smaller. Instead of pushing out all day more and more.

@hheter my doctor also recommended a stomach belt when I’m out and about. Haven’t been out too much yet. But it sounds like a good idea

@piki thank you! I’m sure you are right it will go up and down and change. And if no pain I’m ok.

@hheter, how is your stoma? Were you able to confirm the helpful feedback you got with your ostomy nurse?
