Swallowed a piece of mussel shell, throat hurts to swallow
3 days ago I had a seafood pasta with mussels and I think I accidentally swallowed a piece of broken mussel shell. I’ve had discomfort in the right side of my throat ever since, which hurts more when I swallow, and is accompanied by ear pain on the right ear.
Is it likely the shell has just cut my throat and is making its way through my body, or could it still be stuck? (Would I be in much greater pain if it is stuck?)
do mussel shells break down and digest in the digestive system?
If I had perforated any part of my digestive system, would I know by now?

Hi @pinkcosmos If you’re still experiencing pain and discomfort after 4 days, I’d really suggest getting yourself to an ENT or your PCP for an evaluation. They can take a peek down your throat to see if anything is lodged. I wouldn’t leave this to chance. Do you have a primary care physician?

2 ReactionsUsually mucous tissue heals rather rapidly but if you feel the pain remains the same especially with the extension of pain to the ear, I would at least contact your PCP, then they can refer to ENT if necessary.

1 ReactionThank you - update- I ended up calling doctors who said if I wasn’t experiencing stomach issues, especially on day 2, it most likely would have passed normally, and just scratched my throat on the way down. I later noticed a cut/ulcer on my uvula, which it must have scratched on the way down. As soon as that healed, the ear pain healed too. No gut issues thankfully and a lesson learnt to be more careful when eating food with mussel shells! Thanks for all your help!

5 ReactionsThis happened this evening after eating pasta with mussels. While eating, a piece of shell was in the pasta and was swallowed before the person was able to stop it. She was very afraid and tried eating bread and drinking milk to push it down because it felt like it hadn't gone down. She even tried to gag herself, but nothing came up. Finally we called the paramedics and they came and calmed her down and tested her breathing, lungs, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Those test checked out good though the BP was elevated and the paramedics were more concerned with that than her throat and recommended she get herself checked. They told her to drink big gulps of water and swallow those gulps to help push it down. She said she still felt it was in her throat because her throat hurt. The paramedics told her it had probably been swallowed and the pain/discomfort she was feeling was probably due to the shell "knicking" her throat. They offered to take her to the ER if she wanted to go or she could have a family member drive her or she could drive herself. She isn't experiencing any chest pain or pain anywhere else. One of the paramedics told her that the same thing had happened to him (swallowed a piece of glass accidentally) and other paramedics said the discomfort she was feeling in her throat was soreness from the possible "knick". My question is: can she gurgle with warm salt water to help in healing her throat or no? She is able to eat, and she said her throat does feel like a sore throat when swallowing, but not "painful". So Just knowing that it was shell is what is in her mind and she wants to know what to do. Can she lie down or should she sit up when going to bed?
....sorry cannot offer help but reading this in case this happens to me or someone I know... hope you get some feedbackl... wondering if shell shows up on xray?
