Are you referring to the TURP? Yes, it can reduce the size of the prostate a little, but it’s really designed to remove the blockages to the urethra.
It seems that with BPH you go on antibiotics to reduce the urinary problems going on and also reduce the size of the prostate, which it does as a result of the Infection being eliminated.
I had an enlarged prostate and it was determined to be caused by cancer; and I had an RP. Have you had an MRI or biopsy? I was glad I did. Food for thought. Best of luck.
@kacko There are numerous options to reduce the size of your prostate . Why have you suddendly become concerned ? Has your PSA been rising ? If so has your doctor suggested it may be BPH related ? DON'T BET ON IT . I would request a Tesla 3T Machine MRI to determine if there are any lesions -- and depending on the findings a TRANSPERINEAL , NOT A , TRANSRECTAL , MRI Fusion Biopsy . This and only this will rule out or confirm you have prostate cancer . A PSA , DRE ( Digital Rectal Exam ) and MRI will not determine if you have cancer . They are Amber light and Red Light warning signals only .

FYI I was on Flomax for BPH for several years before being put on Dutasteride 5 years ago . My doctor indicated my rising PSA was the direct result of my BPH -- WRONG BY 1000 % -- I had cancer . What I had not been told , and I believe my doctor was unaware of the fact. When you are on Dutasteride foe an extended period of time . YOU HAVE TO DOUBLE YOUR LAB PSA RESULT . Today my Lab PSA is 8.4 my TRUE PSA is therefore 16.8 . When you have BPH doctors tend to contribute running to the bathroom , or your rising PSA to your prostate getting larger as you age , or perhaps an infection or other factor . The last thing that dons on many of them is cancer , until it is too late .
Good Luckk .

Thank you for your detailed rest. I will try to pick up the book. I have low grade cancer after biopsy. Have had mri. Under surveillance and monitoring. I have a good Doctor! I am 73 years old. Be well and take care.
Was just wondering if the options for my bph were worth pursuing.

I had Green Light Laser for BPH - instant relief, no bleeding, no pain. Urinated like a boy again…
Less invasive than HOLEP which is more like a TURP and physically removes chunks of prostate lining; involves a longer recovery and longer catheter time.
Your pursuit of a remedy is really determined by how much discomfort or inconvenience you have. In my case, I couldn’t urinate or did only partially and was going to the bathroom every half hour…

I am not a physician and do not recommend , under any circumatances , medical advice . However my sage advice is to consult with your Urologist and obtain a 2nd opinion if necessary .
As I referenced previously . There are numerous treatments available . Medications and non- evasive ( same day ).
An associate had Resum Water Therapy which was very successful . Again this was specific for his condition - it may well not be suitable for you . Only your Urologist can decide .
Good luck .

Hi Phil, I'd never heard of 'Green Light Therapy' before. So consulted Mayo on line to find this: https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/green-light-laser-surgery-treats-bph/
Wow! to say the least. I had BPH in 2011 with a huge prostate and its blockage of urine. Now I wonder if I'd had the Green Light if just maybe it would have removed what was probably the very early, and undetectable, beginnings of PC.
Maybe for those with BPH, this is a word of caution and suggestion for those seeking options .

Well, grandpun, you are spot on. Because the lasered tissue can’t be biopsied (it’s vaporized) you don’t know if it is benign or malignant tissue.
My cystoscope showed a very well defined polypoid growth; my urologist at the time told me that prostate cancer never looks like that - it’s usually in the walls or very irregularly shaped - not a finger waving in the breeze.
But 6 yrs later my new urologist - using very sharp 20/20 hindsight - said that it probably WAS PCa at that time. Who knows?
But I have no regrets since 12 yrs ago the only real choices for PCa was either radiation or surgery - both of which could have destroyed my sex life even sooner…what can you do, right?
