Surgeries for colon removal and hernia repair at same time

Posted by stork1 @stork1, 2 days ago

Hi. I had all but about six inches of my colon removed during two separate surgeries in 2023. (Thanks UC/Crohns.) Afterward I developed a large hernia. Now surgeons want to repair the hernia and remove the entire colon and rectum at the same time. Anyone else have these procedures simultaneously? How did you fare? Length of recovery period? Infection? Other complications? Thanks.

I had hernia repair and ileostomy reversal done at the same time. I did get a post-op MRSA infection which slowed recovery due to a second surgery to open the tunneling that took place. I had to wear a wound vac for 6 months until finally healed. All fine after that ended!

Knowing the outcome, would you do it again?

On April 1 of 2025 I had a ileostomy reversal with 10 inches of my rectum left. They also removed gallbladder and repaired hernia. 7 hours in surgery. Spent 17 days in the hospital at Mayo. Couple of complications had an NG tube, but everything went fine. Going back for more surgery February 4, 2026. Have 2 hernias to repair and install patch, another procedure on prostrate and a separation of an old incision that won’t heal. They’re going to cut this out and sew it back. All these will be at the same time. Mayo is the only place to be. The people in Mayo are all angels with God‘s guidance. Lots of prayers for you.

Prayers to a full recovery.

I had the colon removed and the surgeons said the anus would be removed in about 6 mos, which is the advice I followed.

Interesting. They are taking out the rest of my colon and my anus and repairing the rather large hernia all at once.

@stork1
They probably will use mesh to cover the abdomen during hernia repair. Are they doing an ileostomy?

REPLY

Already have an ileostomy but they’ll probably have to move it.
