Supplements for Osteporosis after age 70 - success with supplements?

Posted by lindamarquart @lindamarquart, Sep 21 2:44pm

Has anyone been successful in taking a supplement that includes:
Vit D3, K2 (7), Vit C, Calcium, Phosp., Magnesium and Piper (pepper)
Along with plenty of full fat yogart, milk, protein, nuts and fruits.

Any success in changing your bone DEXA to the good?

None of that will turn osteoporosis into osteopenia, I'm afraid. If only it were that easy. Nutrition is important, of course, but nutrition alone will not fix your bones. We've had story after story of people who refused to take meds, then discovered after a year of a "natural" approach, their bones got worse.

Also, if there's something else going on in your body (hormone problems, lack of calcium absorption, etc.), vitamins and minerals won't address the primary cause.

I guess the answer is that if your bones aren't too bad, and you pay attention to nutrition and weight training (very important!), and there's not some other cause, then you can improve. I know some people have made great progress when embarking on a weight training program.

With all the conversations about treatments, I would love to hear someone over 70, no Hormones left, quite healthy - any successes with any protocols of supplements and or medications or infusions?

@lindamarquart

Linda,

What are your dexa scores and how old are you? What research have you already done and what does your endocrinologist suggest as a treatment plan?

I have to agree with njx58. When my Dexa scores showed mild osteoporosis, I told my PCP that I would try using just a calcium supplement, good nutrition, and exercise. I deteriorated into the "severe" range within a year. I should have gone to a specialist at that point. When I finally did seek out a specialist, I found out that I have an underlying condition called MGUS which is damaging my bones. Nutrition, supplements and exercise cannot "fix" severe osteoporosis. I am now taking Evenity.

The thing is that most of us ALWAYS used calcium, good nutrition and exercise in the past and became osteoporotic DESPITE these. Speaking for myself...I always ate healthy food, lots of dairy, used weights and jogged. Yet my bones deteriorated.

I do have a friend who just turned 70 and is a tall, big boned woman. She has very mild osteoporosis in her hips. She has been taking 1500 mg of calcium+D (but no minerals) and exercising and has been stable since her last Dexa scan 2 yrs ago. Her hip score DID slightly decrease by 0.2 but not significantly. She was told by her PCP to take this amount but my own PCP told me 1500 mg is too high.

@lindamarquart I started Forteo at age 70 and achieved great results in my spine, moving me from osteoporosis to osteopenia. My hips didn't improve that much, so I'm now on Evenity. Unfortunately, a healthy diet, supplements, etc. will not replace bone. Vitamin D and calcium will be part of the treatment with osteoporosis medications, but will not achieve bone mass by themselves.

Hi, success not measured yet, but I take NewChapter bone supplement- plant-based, organic and 3rd party tested- i get it in tiny tabs so I can control the dose…I’m also trying to improve my kidney #s, so I can’t go all in on dairy and protein, so I’m using a modified kidney diet… doing my best to walk more and do exercises/PT to help my bones as well as general health… a challenge, for sure, but have learned a lot here…including that that there is a new clonal antibody med for people with both OP and CKD, worth researching. Zadenvi denosumab.

One study I heard about was a double blind testing one of a drugs that is out now. (don't remember which one). Since no one knew who had the drug and who was in the placebo group, they were all encouraged to take calcium and vit. d. They ALL improved, but the ones on the drugs improved more. So, does that mean that you can improve without the drugs? Maybe, but not as much as if you also take the meds.

@followheart87 thank on this. They say to try Evenity if I can afford it. I have it mild and have had it mild for a while. Your insight has certainly made me think I should take the plunge. Thank you
