Sudden speech jumble, stroke like symptoms but nothing on imaging

Posted by craigbyrom @craigbyrom, Jan 13 4:31pm

Yesterday morning, when I was talking to a relative, suddenly my words turned into gibberish and mumbling and could not speak words, felt weak and tired afterwards but went on with my day as doctors had told me they couldn’t find anything previously so i blew it off- but concerned….felt like a stroke.
Back in May i had a TIA (mini stroke) diagnosed at the emergency room, but the blood clot cleared.
Since then i have experienced cognitive decline.
Neuro psychology testing reporting MCI (Mild cognitive disorder) and concern of blood flow to the brain based on imaging, but cardiologist doesn’t agree.
There is 50% or greater stenosis in one artery and just under 50% stenosis in the other artery to brain.
Multiple imaging shows no abnormal brain activity or lesions outside of some white matter appropriate for my age around 60 years old.
Neurologist i see is passive in any further testing.
At the same time this neurologist is overbooked, understaffed and acknowledges this and I feel that he’s overlooking something.
I have been tested (blood work) for Alzheimer’s and dementia and came back negative.
Weird pressure tingling on left head, no facial paralysis yesterday that i know of, but some left eye pressure and tingling in left hand.
The isolated head pressure/ pain and cognitive decline has been going on since May.
Some days are better than others.
I am physically and mentally active but get frustrated with my abilities.
We feel the doctors are missing something.
Every day I experiences vertigo, forgetting what I’m doing, trouble concentrating and performs on about 1/2 the level of what I used to.
My primary care doctor is proactive and helpful.
Yesterday scared me.!
If someone has knowledge, experience or guidance on similar symptoms and diagnosis, please reach out to me.

Hi @craigbyrom. I have not read if you have past posts efforts so hope new helpful suggestion. Most healthcare systems have dedicated depts to assist those of us not fitting a typical diagnosis and requesting further evaluation. Member Services is the typical starting point who would advise and direct to their process of social worker, health care guide, health advocate, enhanced care manager, ….and if those steps are not available/responsive then most have a grievance process which these days is not used for punitive but rather responsive
action 🙃 Know how frustrating these efforts can be and hope you receive the quickest answers possible on your healing journey 🌈

@craigbyrom, just wanted to check in with you to see how you are feeling lately? Have you noticed any further symptoms, or have those tapered off?

@lisalucier hello Lisa, thank you for reaching out.
Symptoms persist.
Got lost last night on drive home: didn’t know where I was. Lasted for about a minute.
Two days before that, I was driving and thought I was in West Virginia and was trying to figure out which way to Pittsburgh.
Lasted for a couple minutes.
But actually, I’m in Fort Worth, Texas.
I have rejoined my brother at work, but not regular duties of the past 34 yrs. Just doing what I can to be engaged.
I challenge myself daily, get mentally exhausted about mid day.
Trying to get into speech therapy, that’s another challenge…
Thanks again

@craigbyrom - I am sorry to hear the symptoms persist and you are having experiences like getting lost on the drive home. Scary.

Congratulations to you for rejoining your brother at work and keeping engaged.

You mentioned challenges trying to get into speech therapy. What barriers are you experiencing? Are you seeing any progress with getting in?

Spoke with UTSouthwestern Medical center the other day. Told them my condition and brief history of MCI and Mini strokes. The person on the phone said yes regarding being able to treat/ work with me, so I got my primary care to send over referral. 2 days go by and I get a call from someone there with more knowledge and they said they don’t work with stroke and MCI patients. !! All the time, I was feeling comforted knowing I would be starting sooon.
Also finding there are quite a few therapist that work with children/ kids, but not adults my age.
Talked with TCU Miller Speech last Monday and filled out on line history they sent me, along with my insurance and am optimistic, but another week has gone by.
Just feels slow. But there again I am starting to get anxious.
My neuropsychology testing report was supposed to be completed and distributed to my doctors and myself two weeks ago, and still nothing so little frustrated with that too. The only thing I know is what she told me and my son 6 weeks ago on a Zoom meeting, MCI diagnosis, Start speech therapy
