Sty in my left eye, bumps on face by eye and a sore throat!

Posted by pml @pml, 2 days ago

A day or two ago I woke up with what felt like a sty in my left eye. My eyelid is puffy and lined with red. It won't open as far as the right eye. Underneath it my cheek bone is puffy and red also. I have under the skin little bumps on my face by the eye and up on my forehead. I also have a sore throat. I've been putting an antibiotic cream on it which helps somewhat and taking Ibuprofen. Also I gargle with Listerine for the sore throat. My eye only hurts once in a while and not much. Other than being puffy, it's fine. I have an appointment with an ophthalmologist on June 3rd. I've also been praying a lot. I know God will heal it.
Has anyone had this kind of problem? I'd appreciate your suggestions and knowledge. I'd also welcome any and all prayers!
Thank you!

@pml Whenever an inflammation appears at the same time in 3 places, suspect an infection. Since it has gone on for 48 hours now, in your place, I would call my primary provider or clinic in the morning. They may want to see you or refer you to Urgent Care rather than wait 5 more days.

Thank you! My primary care doctor knows about this and is the one who sent a referral to the ophthalmologist. Actually, it's getting a little better. However, as you suggested, I will go to the ER if things get worse. Right now I don't have a fever and feel quite good. My blood pressure is 125/69.

Coincidentally, I have been having similar problem since December, minus the sore throat.

I started what I thought was pink eye in my left eye in December. It wasn’t too bad, and after a while it cleared up on its own. But then I got it worse in my right eye. Very red and puffy. I had my annual appt. scheduled with my ophthalmologist (for AMD), but had to postpone it because he doesn’t treat pink eye and it’s contagious.

It also cleared up on its own, but at some point, my eyes got super itchy. Then my forehead broke out in itchy bumps. I rode that out for about four weeks. I went to the dermatologist. But by then it had improved somewhat. The dermatologist didn’t know what it was, but gave me a prescription cortisone cream. That helped with the itchiness on my forehead.

Then one morning I woke up with pink eye symptoms again. So I tried to make an appt. with a local ophthalmologist, but they would only schedule me with an optometrist, who would then determine if I need to see opthal. By the next day, my eye was better, so I almost cancelled the appt., but decided to go anyway. Doc said he didn’t see anything and that maybe it was time for me to stop wearing contacts.

A couple of weeks after that, I got a sty in my eyelid. I’ve never had a sty before and it was awful. I read that doctors usually don’t do anything for a sty unless it stubbornly remains or keeps coming back. So I rode that out on my own, too.

Then, just a couple of weeks ago, I felt like I was getting another sty in the same eye, but up higher on the lid above the lash line. I ended up treating myself (after googling it) with a Z-pack (azythromycin).

It’s completely gone now. My eyes remain a bit itchy, but not nearly as bad as they were earlier in the year. I never have had seasonal allergies, but I suppose I could have developed some. And I just stopped using the cortisone cream on my forehead and haven’t had the itchy bumps reappear yet.

I don’t know if the eyes and forehead issues were connected or just coincidental. When I saw the dermatologist, she said rosacea can affect the eyes, but that I did not have rosacea. I mention that because it could be a possibility for you with the bumps on your face and red puffy eyes.

It’s very curious reading about your symptoms, I have been having the same problem for several years now except I don’t have the facial bumps. I too thought it was pinkeye or a style but the doctor said he wasn’t sure however he gave me eye drops to relieve itching and discomfort, it sometimes feels like I have something under my eye lid and it changes eyes from one time to the next. To date I haven’t been able to solve the mystery with the help from eye specialist, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was covid related, I say this only because since I had covid two years ago I have experienced new symptoms on and off for some time and no one knows what it is.

You have been through an awful lot! I hope my situation doesn't continue very long. It seems like it's getting better. I looked up Rosacea and I do have some of the symptoms but not most of them. Thanks for mentioning it. I had never heard of it. I'll see what the doctor says on the 3rd. I'll also keep your Z Pack in mind too.
Thanks so much!

Hi Frouke,
That's too bad that you had the same problem with your eyes too. I'm glad you got drops for them. It's interesting that you think it might be related to Covid. That's awful that you have new symptoms also. I never had Covid and I never got the vaccine either. I don't do well with vaccines so I don't get any. Yet, I'm very healthy until I had this problem. I do have incontinence also but that can be dealt with. I see the ophalmologist Tues. I'm just leaving it all up to God. He'll fix it. He always does. I'll say a prayer for you also.
