Stuffy Nose, Dry Nose, Dry Eyes

Posted by gpchew @gpchew, Oct 25, 2022

I've had 'stuffy' nose for almost 14 years. had a septoplasty and turbinectomy 12 yrs ago which didnt really help. had 2 turbinate reductions (RFIT) in the past yr which helped for a month or two each time. ironically, the right side, which doctors have identified to be a clearer passage, is the one that always feels 'blocked'. finally, the doctors suggested it to be dry nose as the symptoms worsen when I exercise (due to increased breathing), drink alcohol and after a meal (dehydration). *however i usually feel better for a day after I consume alcohol*

I was prescribed with nasal gels which caused diarrhea due to the Macrogol, as I've had to apply it almost every 30 min. tried nasal mists which weren't very effective on me, especially in the mornings, made things worse actually. I don't know if I have empty nose syndrome from all the turbinate removal/reduction or whether i have a combination of sinus/allergic rhinutis. Idk. I'm at my wits end and could really use some help. Thank You.

P.S.. For the past 6 months, I've had chronic dry eyes, which i suspect is related to my nose issue. I alleviate this by 'forcing' yawns. I realize i do not yawn naturally unless i force myself to (by closing my mouth and breathing through my nose). i also do not snore, ever.

Hi, I’ve been dealing with what feels like a sinus infection that has dry eyes/dry nose as part of my symptoms for two years (also have fever, shooting pains in head, exhaustion). I was recently put on augmentin and fluconazole and it’s made a giant difference. I’m two weeks into the treatment and feel 85% better. I’ve stumped every doctor I’ve seen, and my CT scans look ok (just show inflammation), so I think they gave me these meds to humor me. I’m also taking serrapeptase which supposedly can help with biofilm type infections. To be clear, I’ve had 12 rounds of antibiotics in the past two years which always made me feel a bit better, but not all the way. In all my research I started to wonder if I had a fungal infection too. Not sure if any of this applies to you, but I hope you get better!

So sorry to hear what you have been going through . Sounds like you should be on an ant-inflammatory diet. Antibiotics work for inflammation because our immune system sort of shuts down when we are taking them. Have you been tested for allergies and foods?
Do you eat dairy and gluten? Those are two categories of foods that can cause inflammation. How is your gut?

...just a guess about this.. i have had dry eyes for 20 years and 4 yrs ago diagnozed with glaucoma.... so used hundreds of bottles of dry eye drops over the years with varying results but no cure; but have used monoprost glaucoma drops since end of 2018... this is preservative free latanoprost. anyway i always had a dry nose or rather didn't have to blow my nose very often ever but spring 2020 started to get abundance of mucous from both nostrils, from where i dont know, and a while back happened to re-read the leaflet in with these eyedrops and there are a lot of side effects including change in eye colour,darkened skin around eye which I have and others things but what caught my attention this time was the heading; "common side effects in the BOY which are printed on page;
- muscle and joint pain, bronchitis, SINUSITIS, skin rash.
i am presuming the frequent mucous from nose a dozen times a day is sinusitis? it is clear, no odour or colour... but after dozens of blows using kleenex can feel a bit sore inside... and haven't had it checked out as drs so busy and i have a list of other issues. if you are using eye drops for dry eyes and not just yawning etc., perhaps read the information page/s with the drops. I would change to another glaucoma drop but they ALL have side effects unfortunately.
ps i am shocked at some of the possible side effects with seemingly harmless otc ointments, etc. and although put down just in case, and for the manufacturer's insurance etc., i think we sometimes forget a simple medicatin can be causing some odd issues with out bodies ... although my spouse is on ten meds a day and didn't read one of the info pages with each drug!

...so today saw nurse practitioner as yesterday everything hurt so bad all day, even the tinnitus never stopped; eustachian tube pain ; hyperacusis, ears felt stuffed to point of pain; a bi of tmd/tmj thrown in lasted all day and i wondered if this constant blowing mucous from nose contributing; cut a long story short as we know tinnitus etc. has no cure; nurse gave me REACTINE Cetirizine Hydrochoride 10mg 24 hour allergy relief pills and an all natural NEILMED sinus rinse; however, when got home and read box of Reactine right on box it says if over age 65 should use the regular strength of 5mg. So, what now? Bother the nurse or phone pharmacist to clarify; also I have chronic dry eyes for 20 years and surely the antihistamine will further dry my eyes ...also the last time, last year, i tried nasal rinse it made my tinnitus worse. Honestly, nothing is simple any more; before i take a pill or use the rinse I want to make sure I wont feel worse... but she feels stopping the constant blowing out of mucous all day long may help the ear pain... I don't know what to do any more!! My adult children say just take the pills, use the rinse, and see what happens, but have had drug reactions in the past a not fun!

1. Eye Irritation and Discharge:
The patient has a history of sleeping with their eyes open, leading to frequent dryness, itching, and white eye discharge. Light sensitivity exacerbates the symptoms, suggesting chronic irritation, possibly due to environmental exposure, allergies, or an underlying infection.
2. Sneezing, Swelling, and Mucus Production:
Estifanos has reported persistent sneezing and noticeable swelling, particularly around the nasal passages and possibly affecting the eyes. Excessive mucus production has also been a significant concern. These symptoms have been ongoing for 5 months and are suggestive of chronic inflammation, possibly due to allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or a respiratory infection.
3. Nasal Symptoms and Sensation of Brain Pressure:
The patient also describes sensations of pressure in the brain, accompanied by unusual smells, which could indicate sinus involvement, further complicated by the persistent sneezing and mucus buildup.

@estifanos, welcome. Is this a medical report that you received from your doctor? Did you get a diagnosis or do you need to go for further testing?
