Stretched bladder, will it ever recover?
I have chronic urinary retention caused by suspected bladder outlet obstruction with an overstretched and possibly underactive bladder.
3 weeks into this, I peed just fine but learned I had a 3cm obstruction in my bladder causing significant urine retention which stretched the bladder (1.5 liters).
On a catheter for 3 weeks with 2 failed voiding trials hoping my bladder would engage, it didn't and told this can be normal.
Cystoscopy coming up soon to determine the obstruction and type of surgery. My big concern is will my bladder function return, A.I. says maybe and if it does not clear if strong or weak come back.
I'm 62, healthy and hoping someone is reading this that can provide good input and advice....thank you!

@map63 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I’m sorry about your urinary retention and stretched bladder. You said that you have cystoscopy coming up and mentioned something about surgery. Are you considering surgery as potential treatment for your conditions?
Hi and thank you for chiming in. Had cystoscopy that confirmed the obstruction was an enlarged prostate (no cancer). Also had a Urodynamics test today that confirmed my bladder has function even though I was unable to pee due to the obstruction (had 840 ml put in me during the test). The technician said I produce a 40 and 33 bladder pressure so I'm optimistic that I'll eventually be able to pee on my own.
Dr. estimates my enlarged prostate at 40 cc which puts me on the lower end for a PAE procedure but have a consulting scheduled this Friday. Have another consultation for HOLEP at Northwestern mid Aug.
I won't feel out of the woods until I have a procedure and I actually pee on my own, for now I'm catheter dependent and not interested in self catheterization.
My previous post explains the other details, can't even believe I'm dealing with this as 6 weeks ago I could pee on my own without issue but didn't realize I was retaining so much in the bladder.
